No clear evidence shows that Scrum Masters as a profession are disappearing. The role is under pressure where it has been reduced to scheduling meetings, updating boards, and relaying status. Its more durable work—coaching teams, resolving impediments, improving collaboration, and helping organizations adapt—is harder to reduce to administration. For career planning, the key question is less whether the title survives than whether a specific job includes that higher-value work.
What a Scrum Master is accountable for
The November 2020 Scrum Guide defines Scrum as a framework for generating value through adaptive solutions to complex problems. It says the Scrum Master is accountable for establishing Scrum and the Scrum Team’s effectiveness, and describes Scrum Masters as “true leaders who serve the Scrum Team and the larger organization.”
That accountability covers more than running events. The Guide describes work such as coaching the team in self-management and cross-functionality, helping it focus on valuable outcomes, causing impediments to be removed, and ensuring Scrum events are productive. It also includes serving the Product Owner and helping the organization remove barriers between stakeholders and teams.
The Guide is a definition of Scrum, not a forecast of hiring or a promise that employers will retain a dedicated Scrum Master position. It also describes Scrum Teams as self-managing: team members decide internally who does what, when, and how. Self-management does not, by itself, make the Scrum Master’s accountabilities disappear.

Why the job title may be under pressure
Administration can be consolidated
Some organizations use “Scrum Master” for a job dominated by meeting logistics, ticket updates, status collection, and information handoffs. Those tasks can be moved into team routines, handled by other roles, or supported by software. In that kind of position, the title may be vulnerable even if the organization continues to use Scrum.
Accountability is not the same as a job description
Employers vary in what they assign to the role. The 2025 Scrum Master Skills in the New World of Work: Specialty Report describes role definitions ranging from facilitator and project administrator to agile coach and product leader. A job title alone therefore says little about how much coaching, organizational improvement, or routine coordination a position actually involves.

What the available demand figures say—and do not say
The 2025 specialty report presents mixed demand among the organizations it surveyed. Its figures are a snapshot from that report, not a universal labor-market series or a reliable forecast for every country, industry, or employer.
| Measure | Reported finding | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Demand for Scrum Masters | 50% of surveyed organizations reported the same demand, 42% lower demand, and 8% greater demand. | The responses show mixed conditions within the report’s sample, not an overall occupation-wide rise or fall. |
| Applications per opening | The report gave an average of 182 applications per Scrum Master position, with a reported range of 70–300 and one case of 1,265. | A high applicant count does not establish that candidates are well matched or that hiring is easy. |
| Finding candidates with the right skills | 55% of organizations said it was very challenging. | This can coexist with many applications: volume and fit are different measures. |
These figures should be attributed to the specialty report and kept within its sample. The available sources do not establish a robust, independent employment series showing whether Scrum Master jobs are increasing or decreasing overall.

A separate signal is broader than this job title: Scrum Alliance’s 2025 annual report says 69% pay higher salaries to people with agile skills regardless of the role being hired for. That supports the value of agile skills across roles; it does not show that Scrum Master openings are growing.
How AI could change the work
AI may reduce time spent gathering information, checking boards, chasing status, and moving updates between people. IBM’s September 4, 2026 article, “The Scrum Master’s Hidden Job, and the AI Teammate Built to Take It,” makes that case while also introducing IBM’s own AI teammate. Treat it as a vendor’s argument about workflow, not independent evidence that AI has eliminated Scrum Master jobs.
Scrum.org’s May 19, 2026 webinar description says AI can create a strong sense of faster progress while warning that speed and volume do not automatically produce value. It emphasizes the Scrum Master’s role in preserving human connection, critical thinking, and learning. A June 2, 2026 Scrum.org blog listing similarly argues that AI may make the role more human, with attention to connection, alignment, inspection, adaptation, psychological safety, quality, and governance. These are professional viewpoints about how the work could evolve, not longitudinal evidence about employment outcomes.
The practical distinction is between automating information handling and replacing human judgment. Tools may make coordination lighter, but resolving conflict, building trust, helping a team learn, and changing how an organization works involve people and context. That does not guarantee a dedicated position; it explains why the work may persist even where the job title changes.

How to judge whether a dedicated role is still useful
For an employer deciding whether to retain a Scrum Master—or a worker assessing a position—the useful question is who will carry the accountabilities and whether they have the time and authority to do it. These are evaluation questions derived from the Scrum Guide, not a validated hiring rubric.
- Team maturity: Does the team reliably self-manage, inspect and adapt, and surface impediments without someone prompting it?
- Actual work: Is the role mostly status collation and logistics, or does it include coaching, facilitation, conflict resolution, and organizational improvement?
- Scope: Does the role support one team or several, and are dependencies or systemic barriers outside the team’s control?
- Outcomes: Do events lead to inspection and adaptation? Are impediments addressed? Is the team becoming more effective?
- Clear ownership: If the dedicated title is removed, who takes responsibility for each Scrum Master accountability, with enough time and authority?
If the role is removed without assigning its work, the organization has changed the title, not necessarily solved the underlying problems. Conversely, a dedicated role that adds little beyond administrative coordination may be difficult to justify if those tasks can be handled reliably elsewhere.
What this means for your career
If you already work as a Scrum Master
Make the work legible. Explain how coaching, impediment removal, stakeholder collaboration, and organizational improvement affect team effectiveness, rather than relying on a list of ceremonies or tools. Build transferable skills in facilitation, coaching, communication, and domain understanding. The specialty report identifies relevant skill areas, but its demand figures should not be treated as a guarantee of job prospects.
If you are considering entering the field
Do not treat a certificate as a job guarantee. Review current job descriptions in the region and industry where you intend to work. Look for evidence that a role includes team effectiveness, coaching, and organizational collaboration, and distinguish those positions from project-administration jobs that happen to use the Scrum Master title. Current, representative vacancy data are not established by the sources cited here.
