Owner Kevin Nagle said the club’s objectives were not being met and that it felt it had to make a change. Grant’s successor, Liam Manning, later left after taking compassionate leave; Huddersfield finished ninth, and Grant went on to become Walsall’s head coach. The sequence was unusual, but the available public accounts do not establish hidden motives or a personal dispute.
Why did Huddersfield Town sack Lee Grant?
Grant’s tenure ended after a 3–1 defeat away to Burton Albion. BBC Sport reported that Huddersfield had won five of their first seven league matches but then struggled for consistency. When Grant was dismissed, the team sat sixth, ten points behind the top two. He had won 17 of his 36 matches in charge, according to BBC Sport’s report on the dismissal.

Those figures describe the position at the time; they do not, by themselves, explain the club’s internal decision. Sixth place was still within the play-off positions, but Huddersfield’s stated ambition was higher. Nagle’s public explanation focused on that gap between objectives and current form.
What did Kevin Nagle say?
In a statement reported by BBC Sport on 17 January 2026, Nagle said the club had entered the season with renewed optimism, reshaped the first team and set clear ambitions. He said: “Sadly, on current form, none of those objectives are being met, and with just under half of the season remaining we feel no other option but to make a change to put the side back on track.”

That is the owner’s stated rationale, not a complete account of the club’s internal deliberations. The public reporting does not establish that Nagle acted for an undisclosed reason or that the decision arose from a personal conflict with Grant.
How did Grant arrive at Huddersfield, and where did he go next?
Huddersfield appointed Grant in May 2025 on a three-year contract. It was his first senior managerial job after three years on Ipswich Town’s coaching staff. After leaving Huddersfield, he took a second senior management role when Walsall appointed him head coach on a three-year contract on 14 May 2026, as BBC Sport reported.

Huddersfield appointed Liam Manning in January 2026. Manning later took compassionate leave and left the club by mutual consent in May. Martin Drury and Jon Stead oversaw the team through the end of the season, when Huddersfield finished ninth, according to BBC Sport’s season-end report.
Manning’s departure was a later event with its own stated circumstances. The public accounts do not establish that Grant’s dismissal caused it.
Why the club’s wider ambitions matter—and what is not known
Nagle has also discussed Huddersfield’s longer-term financial direction at a club-hosted supporters’ panel. The minutes record discussion of taking full ownership of the stadium, possible development including an on-site hotel and mixed-use plans, and seeking more revenue from events and commercial partnerships as part of a sustainable-club model. These are recorded plans and aims, not audited accounts or evidence that development has been completed. The minutes do not show that financial plans were the reason Grant was dismissed.
The clearest supported account is therefore a compressed sequence: Huddersfield set promotion ambitions, Grant was removed while the team was sixth, the next manager later departed after compassionate leave, the club finished ninth, and Grant moved to Walsall. Public statements illuminate the club’s stated objectives, but they do not settle every question about its decision-making.
