Vicuña is a development project spanning Argentina and Chile—not a producing mine. Lundin Mining’s February 2026 technical study reports a very large combined mineral resource, but its figures are estimates, not proven reserves or metal already extracted.
What deposit does the headline refer to?
Filo del Sol is the likely referent. It sits within the broader Vicuña project, whose integrated development plan combines Filo del Sol with Josemaria. The distinction matters: the headline’s Argentine framing does not describe the entire project’s geography, and the latest published resource figures cover the combined Vicuña project rather than Filo del Sol alone.
BHP called Filo del Sol “the largest greenfield copper deposit discovered in the last 30 years” in a speech on May 13, 2025. That is BHP’s dated description of a greenfield copper discovery, not an independently established ranking of every copper-gold-silver deposit in Argentina or worldwide. BHP’s May 2025 statement
Where is Vicuña, and who owns it?
The Vicuña district straddles the Argentina–Chile border. Josemaria is in Argentina; Filo del Sol extends across Argentina and Chile. Vicuña is a 50:50 joint venture between Lundin Mining and BHP Canada. The company’s earlier project description also identifies the two deposits as components of the district. Because the resource and development case is integrated across the district, describing the entire Vicuña estimate as an Argentina-only deposit would be misleading.
How much copper, gold and silver does the latest estimate report?
Lundin Mining’s Q4 2025 annual report says an integrated technical study was published on February 16, 2026. Its updated Vicuña mineral resource supersedes the April 2025 technical report. The following are company-reported resource estimates, not reserves:

Measured and indicated resources have a different level of geological confidence from inferred resources, so the categories should be kept separate. The contained-metal quantities describe estimated metal in the ground; they are not amounts that can automatically be recovered, sold or counted as mineable reserves. What does the development plan propose?
The integrated study describes a three-stage development concept rather than an operating mine:

- Stage 1: Build a sulphide mill and develop the Josemaria open pit and concentrator.
- Stage 2: Add leachable Filo del Sol oxide material and a solvent-extraction/electrowinning (SX/EW) plant.
- Stage 3: Expand the concentrator and develop Filo del Sol sulphides, alongside desalination, a water pipeline and concentrate-slurry infrastructure.
The study models average annual output over the first 25 full operating years of 400,000 tonnes of copper, 700,000 ounces of gold and 22 million ounces of silver. It states an initial mine life exceeding 70 years and estimates Stage 1 initial capital at US$7.1 billion. These are technical-study projections based on assumptions and future development; they are neither current production nor guaranteed outcomes.
The same study’s base case gives an after-tax net present value of US$9.5 billion using assumed prices of US$4.60 per pound of copper, US$3,300 per ounce of gold and US$40 per ounce of silver. That valuation is a modeled result tied to those price assumptions, not a forecast of investor returns or a measure of cash already generated.

Is the mine operating or approved for construction?
No. The cited company reports describe Vicuña as a development project with a technical-study plan, not a mine producing metal. Lundin Mining reported that Vicuña had submitted an application under Argentina’s RIGI long-term investment regime; an application is not approval. The report also said Josemaria’s environmental assessment was under provincial review. The cited information does not establish completed construction approval or a final investment decision.

If developed as modeled, Vicuña would combine substantial copper, gold and silver resources with staged infrastructure and production plans. Copper is central to the project’s projected output, while the gold and silver estimates add valuable by-products to the district’s potential. Its cross-border location, scale and multistage plan also make the project more complex than a single Argentine deposit: development depends on financing, approvals, infrastructure and execution across the project area.

For now, “game-changer” is best understood as a description of potential rather than a statement about present supply. The resource estimate, projected output and mine-life figure all come from company technical-study reporting and remain contingent on future development.
