Japan’s stores stand out for more than their density: the chain combines everyday food, a broad private-label range and services that have expanded well beyond packaged goods. “Awesome” is a matter of taste, but the scale and variety are measurable.
How many 7-Eleven stores are in Japan?
Seven & i Holdings’ 2025 corporate profile lists approximately 23,000 stores in Japan as of the end of February 2025. It gives an approximately 87,000-store global total, with overseas stores counted as of the end of December 2024. The company’s more precise FY2025 year-end figure is 21,927 Seven-Eleven Japan stores. In the same comparison, FamilyMart had 16,415 and Lawson had 14,697. The Seven-Eleven count includes Okinawa. Seven & i’s comparison lists 56,149 convenience stores nationwide across the categories it covers, using Japan Franchise Association monthly statistics and company disclosures. The chain counts are a snapshot for that reporting period, not a claim about today’s exact totals.

Why are Japanese 7-Elevens so good?
There is no objective measure of “good,” and official company figures cannot say what every shopper likes. The evidence does show why the stores can feel unusually useful: a large private-label assortment, prepared food and coffee, and a history of adding practical services to ordinary retail.
A substantial private-label range

Food and everyday services in one stop
The company history records offerings including in-store fried foods and Seven Café, alongside bill-payment collection, multifunction copy machines and ticketing. Together, those examples illustrate the shift from a shop for packaged necessities toward a place where customers can pick up food or handle routine errands. Japan’s first Seven-Eleven opened in Toyosu, Tokyo, in May 1974. The operator describes it as Japan’s first convenience store to use a full-scale franchise system. That early franchise model helps explain how the chain built a broad domestic footprint; it does not by itself explain every local difference in selection or service. What does the store network’s scale mean for customers?
Seven & i reported approximately 22.4 million visits to stores in Japan per day in FY2024. Globally, it reported approximately 62.7 million daily visits, including overseas licensees. Seven-Eleven Japan’s FY2025 data lists chain-wide averages of ¥692,000 in sales per store per day, 922 customers per store per day and ¥750 in average spend per customer. Seven & i’s dated profile gives the clearest like-for-like framing available here: approximately 23,000 stores in Japan as of February 2025 and approximately 87,000 stores worldwide, with the overseas count measured at the end of December 2024.
