The clearest reason for caution is a European Commission finding in May 2026 about Temu’s assessment of illegal-product risks, alongside U.S. enforcement over seller-disclosure and reporting tools. Those actions do not establish that all products are unsafe or that Temu steals payment details. For a shopper, reliability depends on the specific product, the service experience, and whether the company’s disclosed data practices are acceptable.
What does “reliable” mean for a Temu purchase?
Questions such as “is Temu legit, or do they steal your info?” combine several different issues. Temu operates as an online marketplace; the evidence does not support calling the entire platform a scam. But platform legitimacy is not a guarantee that a particular seller or item is safe, accurately described, or easy to return.

The most useful approach is to assess product risk, data practices, and order-service concerns separately rather than treating “reliable” as a yes-or-no guarantee.
What did the European Commission find about product safety and moderation?
On 28 May 2026, the European Commission announced a €200 million fine under the Digital Services Act. It found that Temu had failed to diligently identify, analyse, and assess systemic risks from illegal products on its platform. The finding concerns Temu’s risk-management obligations in the European Union; it is not a determination that every listing is illegal or unsafe.
The Commission said its investigation included mystery shopping and product testing. It reported that a very high percentage of the selected chargers failed basic safety tests, and that a high percentage of tested baby toys presented risks of medium-to-high severity. The Commission’s description does not provide a marketplace-wide failure rate. These results are a reason to be especially careful with safety-critical categories, but they should not be generalized to all Temu products.
Temu’s February 2025 Digital Services Act transparency report described its own moderation procedures: automated screening of listing text, images, and video; human review of uncertain cases; trader-registration checks; and human review of product reports. Those are company-reported controls, not independent proof that every unsafe or illegal listing is caught. The later Commission action is a significant counterpoint: the Commission said Temu’s 2024 risk assessment relied on generalized e-commerce information, underestimated exposure to illegal items, and did not properly assess how recommender systems and influencer promotions could amplify risks.

What does the U.S. enforcement case cover?
The U.S. case focused on seller transparency and consumer reporting under the INFORM Consumers Act, not on a finding that Temu stole customers’ payment details or that the whole marketplace was fraudulent. In September 2025, the Federal Trade Commission described alleged failures to provide accessible telephone reporting of suspicious marketplace activity and reporting tools on gamified product listings. The FTC proposed an order that included a $2 million civil penalty and disclosure requirements.
The Department of Justice later reported that a federal court entered a stipulated order resolving the case. The FTC’s allegations and proposed terms, followed by the DOJ’s account of the entered order, are distinct from a finding about payment theft. The materials available here do not independently establish whether Temu’s current reporting tools comply with the order.

What personal information does Temu say it collects?
Temu’s U.S. privacy policy, last updated 14 November 2025, says it collects account identifiers; transaction and payment information; shipping and contact details; device information; browsing, search, and purchase activity; and customer-support communications. It describes using or sharing data for operating the service, personalization, advertising and analytics, legal compliance, and related purposes.
This is a disclosure of stated collection and use, not proof of covert spying, a data breach, or permission bypass. The reviewed sources do not establish that Temu routinely steals payment credentials, and they do not provide an independent audit of its payment security. The policy cited here applies to the United States; terms and responsible entities can differ by jurisdiction.

What do complaints and Reddit posts tell shoppers?
The Better Business Bureau’s U.S. profile records complaints about product quality, shipping or non-receipt, customer service, returns and refunds, and website usability. Temu’s response describes seller onboarding, spot checks, monitoring, and cooperation with authorities. The complaint themes are useful signals about issues some customers report; they do not establish how often those problems occur across all orders. Temu’s description of controls is the company’s account, not an independent audit result.
A June 2025 discussion in r/ConsumerAdvice likewise shows mixed individual experiences. Some commenters described satisfactory purchases or treated Temu as ordinary online shopping; others raised concerns about privacy, fraud, or product quality. It is one community discussion, not a representative survey or a verified count of incidents. Neither the Reddit thread nor BBB complaint categories supplies a reliable marketplace-wide rate for product failures, data compromises, or customer satisfaction.

How can you decide whether to order?
Use a higher bar when a product failure could cause injury or expose sensitive information. For an inexpensive, noncritical item, a shopper may weigh the price and uncertainty differently than for a charger, baby product, or other safety-critical purchase.
- Check the item, not just the platform. Read the listing and available product details carefully, and be cautious about relying on a low price or broad marketplace assurances as proof of safety.
- Consider the consequences of failure. The Commission’s findings involved selected chargers and baby toys. They do not establish that other categories are safe, but they make extra caution reasonable where safety matters.
- Decide whether the data terms suit you. Review the privacy terms for your country and consider whether the disclosed device, activity, transaction, and advertising-related data practices are acceptable to you.
- Keep order records. Retain the listing details, order confirmation, and relevant customer-service messages so you can refer to what was offered if delivery, quality, or a refund becomes an issue.
- Do not treat anecdotes as odds. Positive or negative posts can help identify questions to ask, but one person’s experience cannot predict the outcome of your order.
There is no evidence here that shoppers need a VPN or a particular security app to use Temu, and no source in this review establishes that such tools would address the documented product-safety, seller-reporting, or customer-service concerns.
Can you compare Temu with another marketplace?
These sources document Temu, not a like-for-like comparison with Amazon or another retailer. A fair comparison would need equivalent evidence for the same country and the same questions: product-safety controls and regulator findings, disclosed data practices, seller identity and reporting tools, delivery and refund complaints, and the scope of any independent review. Without that matching evidence, the record here supports caution about Temu but not a claim that it is categorically safer or less reliable than another marketplace.
