Workers at JBS-owned Swift Beef Company in Greeley, Colorado, began a strike on March 16, 2026, and returned to work after about three weeks when the company agreed to resume contract talks. The two sides announced a two-year agreement on April 12, which workers ratified. UFCW Local 7 called the walkout the first U.S. meatpacking strike in 40 years; the Associated Press identified a 1985 Hormel slaughterhouse strike as the previous comparable U.S. walkout.
Where and when did the strike happen?
UFCW Local 7 said workers at the Swift Beef Company plant in Greeley began an unfair labor practice strike at 5:30 a.m. Mountain Time on Monday, March 16, 2026. Swift Beef is owned by JBS USA. The Associated Press reported that about 3,800 unionized workers were at the plant and, citing union officials, that 99% voted to strike. Those figures were reported by AP, not independently audited in the available accounts. UFCW Local 7’s March 16 statement and AP’s report on the strike describe the launch and its reported scale.
Why did workers strike, and how did JBS respond?
The union’s account
UFCW Local 7 pointed to wage increases it considered inadequate, concerns about healthcare costs, and alleged unfair labor practices. The union characterized the action as an unfair labor practice strike. That is the union’s position; the available sources do not independently establish the allegations.
The company’s account
In a letter, JBS said its core economic proposal had been accepted at other UFCW-represented plants. The company criticized Local 7 for withdrawing from national negotiations and said employees should be allowed to vote on its offer. These are the company’s descriptions of the bargaining dispute, not independent findings about which side’s account was correct. JBS’s letter sets out its stated position.

Was it the first U.S. meatpacking strike in 40 years?
“First in 40 years” was UFCW Local 7’s description of the Greeley action. AP identified a 1985 Hormel slaughterhouse strike in Minnesota as the prior U.S. walkout in its historical comparison, which makes the approximate four-decade framing consistent with that specific comparison. The terms are not perfectly interchangeable: the union used the broader word “meatpacking,” while AP’s comparison was specifically to a slaughterhouse strike. AP’s historical account provides that comparison.

On April 5, UFCW Local 7 announced that workers would return after JBS agreed to resume contract negotiations. The walkout had lasted about three weeks. On April 12, the company and union announced a two-year agreement, which workers ratified. AP reported that JBS was disappointed the union had removed pension benefits negotiated the prior year, while the union emphasized wage gains. Those statements reflect the parties’ different descriptions of the settlement; the agreement’s two-year term and ratification are the shared outcome. UFCW Local 7’s return-to-work announcement, the ratification account, and AP’s reporting on the outcome cover the end of the stoppage and agreement.
