The A$350,000 figure is the reported damages principal, not a confirmed all-in payout. AAP summarized interest as A$34,668, while Time Extension reported separate interest components. Because those accounts differ, it would be misleading to add one interest figure and present it as a definitive total award. The reports also do not establish whether the award has been paid, appealed, stayed, or enforced.
What was the defamation case about?
The claim concerned a 2021 video in which Mitchell said Jobst conveyed a defamatory implication about his earlier legal action against Benjamin Smith, the online creator known as Apollo Legend. In particular, the reported allegation linked Mitchell’s action to Smith’s death by suggesting Smith had been left deeply in debt and that Mitchell’s conduct contributed to his suicide.

AAP reported that Jobst’s video remained online for 15 days and that evidence before the court put its audience at more than 500,000 viewers. Mitchell argued that the video harmed his reputation and his paid convention work. Those details describe the claim and evidence reported in the case; they should not be confused with the damages award itself.
What did the judge say about Jobst’s reasoning?
AAP quoted Judge Ken Barlow describing Jobst’s approach this way: “Clearly he wanted to be the knight who slayed the Mitchell dragon.” The judge added, “His lance was not as strong as he thought it to be.”

On the assumed payment underpinning the claim, AAP quoted Barlow as saying: “His assertions were based on a fallacy, that Apollo Legend had paid a large sum of money to Mr Mitchell.” These quotations are reproduced as reported by AAP.
Did this case decide whether Mitchell cheated at Donkey Kong?
No. The Jobst defamation ruling addressed the meaning and impact of the 2021 video; it did not determine whether Mitchell’s Donkey Kong scores were achieved legitimately. Separate disputes over score records involve different parties and legal questions.

For example, a California Court of Appeal opinion in Mitchell v. Twin Galaxies concerned statements by Twin Galaxies and Mitchell’s score records. It affirmed denial of an anti-SLAPP motion because Mitchell had shown a probability of prevailing at that procedural stage. That was not a final trial finding that his scores were authentic. The opinion also noted that Guinness reinstated his records after its own 2020 investigation. Neither point decides the Queensland case against Jobst.

AAP reported that costs were left for submissions by the parties. The available reports also do not confirm any subsequent appeal, stay, payment, or enforcement outcome, so the A$350,000 principal should not be described as a verified amount received by Mitchell.
