José Canseco’s net worth is commonly listed as an estimated $900,000 by Celebrity Net Worth. That is a published estimate, not a verified current balance sheet: no audited statement or current financial filing establishes his assets and debts. His reported baseball earnings and his 2012 bankruptcy figures are different measures from present-day net worth.
What is José Canseco’s net worth?
Celebrity Net Worth lists Canseco’s net worth at $900,000 on a page accessed in 2026. The site says its figures are calculated from public sources and are estimates unless otherwise indicated. It does not present this figure as an audited disclosure. Celebrity Net Worth’s José Canseco profile is therefore best understood as the source of a commonly repeated estimate, not proof of his current financial position.
Net worth is the value of assets minus liabilities at a given time. A career-earnings total, a past bankruptcy filing, and an estimate on a celebrity-finance site cannot be substituted for one another: they refer to different measures and dates.
Why do reported baseball earnings differ?
Two figures appear in the reporting, and they should remain distinct rather than be averaged or treated as audited totals.
#1 Best Overall
| Figure | What it measures | Attribution and date |
|---|---|---|
| More than $45 million | Reported career salary from professional baseball; historical gross salary, not current wealth | Celebrity Net Worth page accessed 2026 |
| About $55 million | Canseco’s retrospective estimate of the money he had made in baseball before saying it was depleted | Canseco, as reported by Bob Labbe in the Madison Record on July 2, 2025 |
The measures may reflect different ways of describing career earnings. The available reporting does not establish a reconciled total. Neither figure tells a reader how much money Canseco has now.
What do the bankruptcy figures show?
The Society for American Baseball Research reports that Canseco’s 2012 bankruptcy filing listed $1.7 million in liabilities and $21,000 in assets. Those are filing-era figures: they document severe financial distress at that point, but do not establish his assets, debts, or net worth today. SABR’s José Canseco biography provides the historical filing context.

Earlier, a Sportsnet Magazine profile reported Canseco saying that more than $45 million he had earned playing professional baseball was gone. It described his account of taxes, divorce costs, family support, and investments, and reported that he planned to file for bankruptcy and owed the IRS $1.1 million at the time of the article. Those are statements and reporting from that period, not current balances. The profile quoted him: “Divorce and taxes alone are devastating.” Sportsnet Magazine’s profile records that earlier account.

In a 2025 interview with the Madison Record, Canseco estimated his baseball earnings at about $55 million and attributed losing the money to bad investments, lavish living, and divorces. The report also said he was doing appearances, speaking engagements, and event work, and had developed the PX 4040 hitting device. These details point to reported post-career activities, but they do not establish income, sales, the device’s current asset value, or a present net-worth figure. The Madison Record’s 2025 interview report is the source for those claims.

How to interpret the $900,000 figure
- Use it as an attributed estimate: it is Celebrity Net Worth’s figure, not a verified disclosure.
- Keep earnings separate from wealth: the reported career totals of more than $45 million and about $55 million describe different historical claims, not current assets.
- Treat bankruptcy numbers as historical: the reported 2012 assets and liabilities do not show what followed.
- Do not infer a current financial breakdown: the cited accounts identify past explanations for losses and later work, but do not verify present income, assets, or debts.
