Box Office Mojo’s domestic weekend table records $37,678,467 for October 4–6, 2024. That is the later reported actual, not the estimate circulated before the weekend. The Associated Press reported on October 6 that Warner Bros. had initially estimated a $40 million opening.

Different outlets rounded the result differently. Rotten Tomatoes reported $37.5 million, while Box Office Mojo’s weekend table gives the more exact figure of $37,678,467. The gap between the studio estimate and that later total was about $2.3 million.
How did the opening compare with the first Joker?
The original Joker opened domestically to about $96.2 million in 2019, according to Rotten Tomatoes’ 2024 weekend report. Folie à Deux’s reported opening was less than half as large. The comparison concerns domestic opening-weekend grosses, not worldwide totals or overall profitability.

What had been expected before release?
The sequel’s opening fell below both the studio’s initial estimate and an earlier market projection, but those figures were not the same kind of forecast. The AP reported that tracking services had projected a $70 million debut about three weeks before release; it later reported Warner Bros.’ $40 million estimate on October 6. The tracking figure was attributed to services generally, not to a named firm in the cited report.

Why did analysts call it a difficult result?
Paul Dergarabedian, Comscore’s senior media analyst, told the AP that the weak opening combined with poor audience reviews was “a double whammy that’s very difficult to recover from.” That is his assessment of the opening and audience response; the available reporting does not establish that he used the headline phrase “unmitigated disaster.”
The commercial disappointment is clear relative to the film’s own expectations and the first movie’s debut. It does not, by itself, prove the sequel’s ultimate financial loss. The Numbers lists a reported $190 million production budget, but a production budget is not the same as total cost, and a film’s box-office gross is not the amount received by the studio. Those figures are insufficient to calculate a precise profit or loss.

The Numbers’ franchise table lists Joker: Folie à Deux at $207,500,287 worldwide, including $58,300,287 domestic. These are reported final gross figures in a source accessed in 2026; they provide a broader outcome than the opening weekend alone, but still do not disclose the studio’s net receipts or total costs. The Numbers also lists a Warner Home Video release date of October 29, 2024; that listing does not establish which editions or formats are currently available.
