Kubasik resigned from Lockheed Martin on November 9, 2012, after the company’s board requested and received his resignation. Lockheed Martin said an internal ethics investigation confirmed that he had a close personal relationship with a subordinate employee, violating the company’s Code of Ethics and Business Conduct. His departure came just weeks before he was due to become CEO.
What happened to Christopher Kubasik?
Kubasik was Lockheed Martin’s vice chairman, president and chief operating officer. The company said his resignation was effective immediately on November 9, 2012. He was 51 and had been named president and COO-elect in April, with a planned transition to CEO in January 2013.
In its November 9, 2012 announcement and attached Form 8-K, Lockheed Martin said its investigation had confirmed a close personal relationship between Kubasik and a subordinate employee and that the relationship violated the company’s Code of Ethics and Business Conduct. The company did not identify the employee or provide further details about the relationship, and those details should not be inferred.
Was Kubasik fired or did he resign?
The most precise description is that Kubasik resigned after the board requested his resignation. Lockheed Martin’s announcement said the board “requested and received” it; the separation agreement described the resignation as being in lieu of termination. A contemporaneous CBS News report by the Associated Press used “fired” in its headline, a shorthand that captures the involuntary context but not the formal action recorded by the company.

Who took over at Lockheed Martin?
The board elected Marillyn A. Hewson president and COO and a director immediately on November 9. She was scheduled to become CEO and president on January 1, 2013. Robert J. Stevens, then CEO, was scheduled to step down at year-end and become executive chairman.
Lockheed Martin said its succession plan enabled the board to act quickly and described Hewson as a prepared successor with extensive company experience. The announcement said she had joined Lockheed Martin in 1983 and had served as executive vice president of Electronic Systems since January 2010. Those are the company’s descriptions of its transition plan, not an independent assessment of it.

What did Lockheed Martin say about the business impact?
The company said the incident did not affect its operational or financial performance. That statement was Lockheed Martin’s own assessment; the cited announcement does not present it as the result of an independent audit. The company’s release described Lockheed Martin at the time as having about 120,000 employees worldwide and reported $46.5 billion in net sales for 2011. Those historical company figures provide context for the organization, not a measure of the incident’s impact.
Timeline of the leadership change
- April 2012: The board named Kubasik president and COO-elect, according to the company’s November announcement.
- November 9, 2012: The board requested and received Kubasik’s immediate resignation, and elected Hewson president and COO and a director.
- January 1, 2013: Hewson was scheduled to become CEO and president, with Stevens becoming executive chairman.
Keep the 2012 departure separate from later reporting
A separate 2026 story concerned Kubasik’s departure from L3Harris. Semafor’s August 17, 2026 report recalled the Lockheed Martin episode while discussing the later departure. It also reported that Kubasik, through a spokesperson, denied having a relationship with a subordinate in connection with leaving L3Harris and said such allegations were not the reason he left that company. Those later claims concern a different employer and event; they do not alter what Lockheed Martin said about its 2012 investigation.
