What happened in 2023?
Lyft announced its leadership succession plan on March 27, 2023. The company said its co-founders, then CEO Logan Green and president John Zimmer, had decided to move from full-time executive management into non-executive board roles. Lyft’s announcement described the change as a transition to chair and vice chair of the board—not an immediate departure from Lyft.
The changes took effect in stages. Lyft’s March 27, 2023 Form 8-K records David Risher’s appointment as CEO and Green’s move to board chair on April 17. Sean Aggarwal became lead independent director that day. Zimmer’s move from president to non-executive vice chair took effect June 30; Risher became President and CEO on July 1.

Who replaced Logan Green as Lyft CEO?
David Risher, who had been a Lyft board member, succeeded Green as CEO effective April 17, 2023. He assumed the combined President and CEO title on July 1. Green moved into the board chair role rather than leaving Lyft at the time of the CEO transition.

Did the founders leave Lyft in 2023?
No. The 2023 change was a move out of full-time executive jobs into non-executive board service. Green served as chair and Zimmer as vice chair after their management transitions. Their later board departure was a separate event.
When did Green and Zimmer leave Lyft’s board?
Lyft announced on August 14, 2025, that Green and Zimmer intended to leave the board that day. The company also announced that Aggarwal had been elected board chair. Lyft characterized the departure as “marking the successful completion of a two-year transition plan”; that is the company’s description of the transition.

Lyft said the founders would convert all their Class B shares to Class A on August 15, 2025. The company stated that, after conversion, all common shareholders would have equal voting rights. Its announcement reported approximately 9.69 million combined Class A shares held by Green and Zimmer following the conversion; that is a company-reported figure tied to the 2025 announcement, not a live ownership total. The company announcements establish the leadership changes and their timing, but do not establish an independent explanation for why Green and Zimmer chose that timing.
