Effectively, yes—if “debt-free” means no borrowings separately reported. Nintendo Co., Ltd.’s consolidated balance sheet for June 30, 2026 shows no separate loans, borrowings, or bonds line. It does report other liabilities, so that is not the same as having no obligations. The company released the results on August 6, 2026; the conclusion applies to that reporting date, not to any later changes.

What Nintendo reported as of June 30, 2026

Nintendo’s consolidated financial statements cover Nintendo Co., Ltd. and its consolidated subsidiaries. The balance sheet reports the following figures in million yen:

Balance-sheet item Reported amount
Cash and deposits ¥1,544,090 million (about ¥1.544 trillion)
Securities ¥423,818 million (about ¥423.8 billion)
Total liabilities ¥896,944 million (about ¥896.9 billion)
Total assets ¥3,815,896 million (about ¥3.816 trillion)
Other current liabilities ¥477,787 million
Other non-current liabilities ¥70,059 million

Cash and deposits plus securities total ¥1,967,908 million, or about ¥1.968 trillion—roughly ¥1,071 billion more than total liabilities. This is a comparison of reported asset and liability lines; it does not mean all securities are cash equivalents. Nintendo’s August 6, 2026 consolidated results provide the underlying figures.

Why “no borrowings reported” is more precise than “no liabilities”

Debt-free usually refers to interest-bearing borrowings, while total liabilities include a wider range of obligations. Nintendo’s balance sheet lists trade payables, provisions, income taxes payable, other current liabilities, a retirement benefit liability, and other non-current liabilities. These are not interchangeable with loans or bonds.

  • The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld

  • Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play

The statement does not show a separate loans, borrowings, or bonds line. That supports saying no borrowings are separately reported, rather than claiming Nintendo has no debt-like obligations of any kind: the balance sheet groups some amounts under “Other” without detailing their full composition there.

For the three months ended June 30, 2026, Nintendo reported ¥63 million in interest expense and ¥13,196 million in interest income. Those income-statement figures provide context but do not, by themselves, establish whether the company had borrowings.

Cash and deposits are not the same as cash equivalents

When comparing Nintendo’s liquidity across reports, do not treat “cash and deposits” and “cash and cash equivalents” as identical measures. In its fiscal-year 2026 statements, Nintendo reported ¥1,791,802 million in cash and deposits at March 31, 2026, alongside ¥1,316,680 million in cash and cash equivalents. Its notes reconcile the measures by deducting time deposits with maturities over three months and adding short-term investments with original maturities of three months or less. Nintendo’s FY2026 results and notes explain that reconciliation.

What Nintendo said about its liabilities

In its August 6, 2026 results release, Nintendo said: “Total liabilities increased by 46.8 billion yen compared to the previous fiscal year-end to 896.9 billion yen mainly due to an increase in notes and accounts payable-trade.” The cited increase was compared with the previous fiscal year-end, March 31, 2026, and Nintendo attributed it mainly to trade payables—not to a separately reported borrowing line.
