That is a finding about purchases made through Instacart—not a nationwide poll of people’s favorite flavors.
What is America’s favorite ice cream flavor?
Instacart’s July 8, 2026 report, “Pint-Sized Obsessions: Instacart Maps America’s Favorite Ice Cream,” analyzed how customers stocked pints and tubs across its platform in 2025. Vanilla led the national ranking at about 21% of ice cream orders. Chocolate was second at 7.9%, followed by cookie dough at 6.9%.

These figures are order shares reported by Instacart, not the percentage of Americans who chose each flavor in a survey. They describe what customers ordered through one platform.
Does vanilla really beat chocolate?
In Instacart’s 2025 order data, yes: vanilla’s reported share was about 21%, compared with 7.9% for chocolate. The numbers establish which flavor led on Instacart; they do not establish that more Americans say they like vanilla best.

A previous Instacart report said vanilla made up 27% of ice cream sold on its platform in summer 2024. That older figure covers a different period and uses a different measure—share of ice cream sold, rather than share of 2025 orders—so the two figures should not be treated as a direct year-over-year trend. What is the most popular ice cream flavor in each state?
Instacart says vanilla was the most-ordered flavor in every state and Washington, D.C., in 2025. The report also points to regional and state “signature” flavors, but those rankings answer a different question: which flavors have a larger share of local orders than of orders nationally.

A local signature does not necessarily outsell vanilla in that state. It means the flavor accounts for a larger share of local orders than it does nationally—a measure of relative local popularity, not the overall state winner.

Häagen-Dazs led the brand ranking at roughly 24% of orders, ahead of Ben & Jerry’s, with Breyers third. Instacart also identified different favored brands by region: Tillamook in the West, Blue Bell in the South, and Blue Bunny across the Plains.

The report names Alec’s Ice Cream, Rebel, and Van Leeuwen among the fastest-growing brands it considered. Its growth comparison covers 2024 to 2025 and includes brands that already had a real foothold in the prior year; it is not a ranking of every new or emerging ice cream brand.

How to interpret Instacart’s flavor rankings
- “Most-ordered” is not the same as “most liked.” The report measures platform ordering behavior, not stated preferences from a representative survey.
- National rank differs from local signature. The national ranking identifies the most-ordered flavor overall; a state signature identifies a flavor with a higher local order share than its national share.
- Brand and flavor rankings use different measures. Häagen-Dazs’ reported share is a brand figure, while the flavor percentages describe flavor orders.
- The published account does not provide enough detail to independently reconstruct every calculation and inclusion rule. Read the findings as Instacart’s reported results for its platform, rather than as a complete census of U.S. ice cream buying.
