When it opened, the South Perth Coles Local was reported as Western Australia’s first store in the smaller-format supermarket concept. Its opening-era distinction was a curated range of Western Australian food and drink, alongside ready-to-eat meals, bakery goods, coffee and specialty food stations.
What made the South Perth store different?
PerthNow’s 10 November 2022 report described a supermarket shaped around local producers and convenient food options. It said the store carried close to 500 Western Australian food and drink products from 45 local businesses. Those are figures from the 2022 report, not a current inventory count.
The article called it the 18th Coles Local across Australia at that time. That is a historical network count, not a statement about the chain’s current size.
Which local businesses and foods did the report feature?
The opening-era assortment brought together everyday groceries and more distinctive prepared or specialty items. PerthNow named:

The report also mentioned frozen dessert bars. Together, the examples show the mix highlighted at the time: local food businesses, specialty counters and options suited to eating soon or taking home.
How did Coles describe the store’s local focus?
Jon Haggett, then Coles general manager of store development, said the store had been tailored “to the taste and preferences of the local community with the goods sourced from small local businesses,” as quoted in PerthNow’s 10 November 2022 report. The statement described Coles’ intent for the store; it does not establish how supplier relationships or the assortment may have changed since opening.

What is known about the store today?
The opening-era report does not verify the South Perth store’s current operating status, hours, suppliers, product range or present-day place in the Coles Local network. Its figures and named offerings should therefore be read as a snapshot of what PerthNow reported in 2022, not as a guide to what shoppers will find now.
