The change took legal effect on February 6: Bhusri became CEO and remained board chair, while Eschenbach left both the CEO role and the board. Workday said Eschenbach would continue as a strategic adviser to the CEO.
What changed at Workday
The leadership change was effective February 6, 2026, according to Workday’s Form 8-K filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on February 9. Workday announced the succession publicly on February 9, three days after it took effect.
- Aneel Bhusri: Returned as CEO and continued as chair of the board.
- Carl Eschenbach: Ceased to be CEO and resigned from the board.
- Eschenbach’s next role: Workday said he would support Bhusri and the company as strategic adviser to the CEO.
Why Workday said it made the change
Workday presented the succession as leadership for an AI-focused next chapter. Vice chair and lead independent director Mark Hawkins said, “As we enter a defining moment shaped by AI, there is no one better than Aneel to lead this next chapter.” Bhusri described his view of the technology shift this way: “AI is a bigger transformation than SaaS — and it will define the next generation of market leaders.” That is Bhusri’s assessment, not an independently established finding about the industry.
The company did not establish AI as the sole reason for the transition, nor did its announcement identify a specific performance failure as the cause. Its explanation was strategic: it said Bhusri was the right leader for the company’s next chapter as AI reshapes its business.

Bhusri’s history as Workday CEO
Bhusri co-founded Workday in 2005. Workday’s SEC filing records a long leadership history at the company before his return:
- 2007–2009: President
- 2009–2014: Co-CEO
- 2014–August 2020: CEO
- August 2020–January 2024: Co-CEO
In the earlier transition, effective February 1, 2024, Bhusri became executive chair and Eschenbach became CEO. Workday’s February 2026 announcement described Eschenbach as having served as CEO for “the past three years.”

What Eschenbach said about leaving
Eschenbach’s statement in Workday’s announcement thanked the company and highlighted work he said had been accomplished during his tenure: “It’s been a privilege to serve as CEO over the past three years and I’m proud of all we achieved — instilling greater operational discipline, expanding globally, broadening our industry focus, and laying meaningful groundwork in AI.” These are Eschenbach’s own characterizations of the company’s progress.
What was known about Workday’s outlook at the time
In its February 9 announcement, Workday said it expected fiscal 2026 fourth-quarter and full-year results to be in line with its prior guidance, except for the GAAP operating-margin matter disclosed in a February 4 Form 8-K. This was the company’s outlook when it announced the leadership change, not a report of actual results.

Workday CEO status after the transition
A Workday newsroom listing in October 2026 said a new chief marketing officer would take office on October 5 and report to Bhusri. That is a later indication of his role at the company, though the listing was not a dedicated filing confirming CEO status.
