Avatar: Fire and Ash debuted at No. 1 at the U.S. and Canadian box office with $89.2 million, but its domestic opening was $44.9 million below Avatar: The Way of Water’s $134.1 million debut. The two figures describe opening-weekend scale, not the films’ eventual earnings or profitability.
Fire and Ash ranked first domestically with an $89.2 million opening
Avatar: Fire and Ash opened in the United States and Canada on December 19, 2025. Its reported domestic opening weekend was $89.2 million, enough to lead the box office. The film’s title page reports that opening and its No. 1 ranking (Avatar: Fire and Ash).

Ranking and scale answer different questions: No. 1 identifies how the film performed against other releases that weekend, while $89.2 million measures the size of its reported domestic debut.
Its domestic debut was $44.9 million below The Way of Water
Avatar: The Way of Water opened domestically to $134.1 million in 2022, according to the same title-page source. Comparing domestic with domestic, Fire and Ash opened $44.9 million lower—a decline of about one-third from its predecessor’s opening.
#1 Best Overall
- Return to Pandora for the third chapter of Marine turned Na’vi leader Jake Sully and his family. Reeling from one death, the Sullys set out to prevent another — aided by the Wind Traders. But on the way, they’re attacked by the Ash People, who blame Eywa for their ravaged home. Warning: Some flashing-lights scenes may affect photosensitive viewers.
| Film | Domestic opening weekend | Difference |
|---|---|---|
| Avatar: The Way of Water (2022) | $134.1 million | — |
| Avatar: Fire and Ash (2025) | $89.2 million | $44.9 million lower |
These are reported U.S. and Canadian opening-weekend figures, not worldwide totals or lifetime grosses. The comparison establishes a smaller domestic start; by itself, it does not establish whether the newer film was profitable or how its full theatrical run would compare.
Sunday update estimates were provisional, not the final opening report
The Sunday-update listing was authored by Brennan Klein and says it was refreshed with Sunday-morning projections on December 21, 2025. The listing describes an update during opening weekend; it is not a lifetime-gross report. The accessible listing does not provide a verifiable Sunday domestic projection chart (IMDb News syndicated ScreenRant listing).

For worldwide receipts, the contemporaneous Sunday update was reported as an estimate of $345 million, including $257 million internationally. That wording appears in a MovieChat post reproducing Deadline excerpts, so it is a secondary reproduction rather than a directly verified Deadline article (MovieChat post reproducing Deadline excerpts).
The film page later lists a $347.1 million worldwide opening (Avatar: Fire and Ash). Keep that reported figure distinct from the $345 million Sunday estimate: one is the later reported opening total, the other a provisional weekend update. Neither should be compared directly with the $89.2 million domestic opening, because the worldwide total includes markets outside the United States and Canada.

What the opening figures do—and do not—show
- They show: Fire and Ash led the domestic weekend, while opening below The Way of Water by $44.9 million.
- They do not show: either film’s profitability, final worldwide gross, or whether audiences’ eventual response matched the opening-weekend comparison.
- They require like-for-like comparisons: use domestic figures against domestic figures and worldwide figures against worldwide figures, while labeling Sunday estimates as provisional.
