Does CeraVe test on animals?
CeraVe’s U.S. FAQ says, “CeraVe does not test on animals.” Its parent group, L’Oréal, says it stopped testing product safety on animals in 1989 and describes alternatives including reconstructed human skin and predictive assessment methods. Why does PETA say CeraVe may not be cruelty-free?
PETA’s current listing says “CeraVe (L’Oreal) may not be cruelty-free” because CeraVe has not signed PETA’s statement of assurance. PETA’s criteria cover a company and its ingredient suppliers worldwide, so its list is assessing a broader commitment than a brand’s statement about its own product testing. Not appearing on that list does not, by itself, prove that CeraVe tests on animals; it means PETA says the brand has not met its stated assurance requirement. L’Oréal’s 2023 Universal Registration Document also noted that authorities may decide to conduct tests on certain cosmetic products in China during that reporting period. What to check before buying
- For animal-testing standards: Decide whether a brand’s own testing statement is enough for you or whether you require acceptance by a named independent program such as PETA’s.
- For vegan suitability: Check the exact product’s current ingredients, and seek ingredient-origin confirmation when that matters to your decision.
- For environmental claims: Check which product and attribute a certification or claim covers; do not treat a single product example as proof about an entire company.
