Beginners can get exposure to Chinese companies through several different routes, but buying mainland-listed A-shares is not the same as buying Hong Kong-listed shares or a fund that holds Chinese securities. Overseas investors can trade some mainland A-shares through Northbound Stock Connect, subject to investor, broker and security eligibility. Start by identifying what you want to own and confirming that you can access it; there is no single route that suits every investor or jurisdiction.

What counts as investing in the Chinese stock market?

The phrase can refer to different investments: shares listed on mainland exchanges, Chinese companies listed in Hong Kong, or funds and ETFs listed in an investor’s home market that hold China-related securities. Those are not interchangeable. The listed instrument, underlying holdings and legal rights can differ, so check the product documents rather than assuming that every investment described as “Chinese stocks” gives the same exposure.

Mainland A-shares trade on the Shanghai Stock Exchange (SSE) and Shenzhen Stock Exchange (SZSE). For overseas investors, Northbound Shanghai-Hong Kong and Shenzhen-Hong Kong Stock Connect provide access to selected mainland A-shares and ETFs through Hong Kong market infrastructure. They do not cover every mainland security, other categories such as B-shares and bonds, or IPO participation. See the HKEX Stock Connect overview.

Which route might fit your situation?

Route What it can provide Access and key checks
Mainland A-shares through Northbound Stock Connect Trading in selected Shanghai- and Shenzhen-listed A-shares and ETFs. Requires an eligible intermediary and an eligible security; access is not available to investors in every jurisdiction. Rules and eligible lists can change. HKEX
Hong Kong-listed Chinese companies Exposure to companies listed in Hong Kong; this is not the same as owning mainland A-shares. Availability depends on local law, broker support and the specific security. Product-specific access details are not stated in the cited sources; verify them with your broker and the issuer’s materials.
Funds or ETFs listed in your home market Potential exposure to a selected basket of China-related securities, depending on the fund’s mandate and holdings. Holdings, concentration, fees, currency and legal structure vary by product; comparative product details are not stated in the cited sources. Read the current prospectus and holdings disclosures.

This is a route comparison, not a recommendation. For any option, establish what the instrument owns, how diversified it is, what currency and charges apply, and what rights attach to it. Costs, tax treatment and legal structure need to be checked for the particular product and your jurisdiction.

Can overseas beginners buy mainland A-shares?

Some can, through Northbound Stock Connect, but eligibility applies to both the investor and the security. HKEX says access is currently available through Hong Kong-licensed or regulated intermediaries, and direct Stock Connect access is unavailable outside Hong Kong and Mainland China. That does not mean every overseas resident can use the route: local rules and the broker’s permissions matter. Confirm both before opening an account or placing an order. The HKEX overview and FAQ describe these access limits.

The SSE says its main-board Northbound route is open to Hong Kong and overseas institutional and individual investors, while Northbound STAR Market trading is limited to institutional professional investors. The security must also meet exchange eligibility criteria. The SSE eligibility page explains these distinctions. The SSE separately describes QFII as an access route for qualifying international institutional investors, rather than a typical beginner retail route; see its Stock Connect introduction.

How to check whether a route is workable

  1. Identify the investment. Decide whether you mean a mainland A-share, a Hong Kong-listed company, or a fund or ETF. For a fund, inspect its mandate and current holdings; a China label alone does not tell you what it owns.
  2. Check your jurisdiction and account access. Ask your broker whether it offers the specific market or product to residents of your location and whether it supports Northbound Stock Connect. Check applicable local rules independently; Stock Connect availability is not universal.
  3. Verify investor and security eligibility. For Stock Connect, confirm that your investor category qualifies and that the exact security appears on the current eligible list. Eligibility can change, and inclusion of some securities does not imply access to every A-share.
  4. Read the trading and settlement rules. Confirm order types, market hours, quotas, settlement and resale timing, and any applicable price limits. Do this for the relevant route and security rather than assuming rules match your home exchange.
  5. Calculate the full cost and understand the rights. Check trading and custody charges, currency conversion, fund expenses and taxes for your location. Review the instrument’s legal structure and investor rights in its official documents; these details vary and cannot be inferred from the market label.

Trading rules Stock Connect beginners should know

Under the mechanics described in HKEX’s October 2024 investor booklet, Northbound A-shares and mainland-listed ETFs cannot be day-traded: securities bought on T-day can be sold on or after T+1. The booklet also describes general price limits, with different treatment for certain boards and ETFs. These are not a substitute for checking the current rules for a particular security; consult the HKEX Stock Connect Investor Booklet and FAQ (October 2024) and your broker’s current guidance.

Stock Connect is limited to eligible securities, and its lists and operating rules may change. It also does not provide a route to participate in mainland IPOs. Check the current HKEX Stock Connect information before trading.

What recent Stock Connect figures do—and do not—show

HKEX’s Stock Connect 2025 Review, published in February 2026, reports that Northbound average daily turnover was RMB 212.4 billion in 2025, up 42% year on year. At end-December 2025, the link included 3,265 eligible A-shares and 365 ETFs. HKEX also reports that around RMB 2.6 trillion—71% of international investors’ Stock Connect shareholdings—was held through Stock Connect at end-2025, in its Stock Connect overview.

These are dated measures of market activity, eligible securities and holdings. They do not show whether an investment will rise, whether a particular security is suitable, or what a beginner should buy.

What to investigate before investing

Access is only one part of the decision. For the specific security or fund, investigate concentration and diversification, currency exposure, liquidity, fees, tax treatment, legal structure and the rights attached to the investment. The relevant answers depend on the product and your location; do not assume that a fund, Hong Kong-listed share and mainland A-share have identical risks or protections. Where the official product documents or your broker do not make a point clear, get jurisdiction-specific professional guidance before committing money.
