Intuit communications chief Rick Heineman asked The Verge to remove part of editor-in-chief Nilay Patel’s interview with CEO Sasan Goodarzi, Patel reported on October 21, 2024. The Verge said it refused, citing its policy against letting interview subjects preview questions or change published work. The disputed exchange concerned TurboTax, tax reform, and Intuit’s lobbying around free tax filing.

What part of the interview did Intuit ask The Verge to remove?

Patel’s interview with Goodarzi was an episode of The Verge’s Decoder podcast. In Patel’s account, the disagreement arose during a discussion of TurboTax and Intuit’s lobbying around free tax filing. Goodarzi disputed Patel’s framing of the lobbying question. Patel reported that Heineman later criticized the questions and Patel’s tone as “inappropriate,” “egregious,” and “disappointing,” and requested that the end portion of the interview be deleted.

Patel reproduced the email’s closing request as: “at the very least the end portion of your interview should be deleted.” These details come from Patel’s first-person account; the private correspondence is not independently confirmed here. The Verge’s account of the request includes the published exchange.

How did The Verge respond?

Patel said The Verge declined to remove the segment. He described the outlet’s policy this way: “we never allow anyone to preview or approve interview questions, and we certainly do not allow anyone to review or alter the work that we publish.” In other words, the outlet treated the interview as editorial work under its control rather than material the subject or company could approve after the fact. Patel’s explanation of the policy is part of the same report.

Why was TurboTax and free filing part of the dispute?

The interview’s subject was not simply tax software features: Patel’s account connects the disagreement to questions about Intuit’s lobbying and free tax filing. The Verge reported that Intuit spent nearly $3.8 million on lobbying in 2023. That figure is the publication’s reported context, not an independently verified total here. The Verge’s report provides the figure and its framing.

The Verge also reported that Intuit agreed in 2022 to a $141 million settlement related to refunds for people eligible for free filing who were directed to paid products. That description should not be broadened into a claim about all TurboTax customers or all tax-preparation charges. The separate Federal Trade Commission document located in connection with TurboTax “free” advertising is an initial decision; by itself, it does not establish the proceeding’s eventual status.
