How to Answer “Why Shouldn’t We Hire You?” in an Interview

Choose a genuine limitation that is not central to the job, explain how you manage it, and connect your answer to the employer’s needs.

Give a truthful, specific limitation that does not undermine a core requirement of the job. Briefly explain how you manage or improve it, then connect your answer to evidence that you can meet the employer’s needs. The right example depends on the role; there is no universally safe weakness to name.

What the interviewer may be looking for

“Why shouldn’t we hire you?” is a more pointed version of a weakness question. Career-advice sources say an interviewer may be assessing self-awareness, honesty about limitations, or how you respond to an unexpected prompt. Those are possible aims, not guaranteed motives; you cannot know from the question alone what this particular interviewer intends.

Answer the question directly rather than claiming you have no shortcomings or listing unrelated strengths. Then show that you understand the role and can discuss your fit in a measured way.

How to choose what to say

Before settling on a weakness, compare it with the job’s actual requirements. Indeed’s guidance and The Balance Money both emphasize tailoring the answer, while Lincoln College’s sample interview material recommends preparing relevant examples.

Check Ask yourself
Is it real and explainable? Can I describe a genuine limitation clearly, without using a stock phrase?
Is it central to the job? Would this limitation cast doubt on a core qualification or essential responsibility?
Can I show a response? Have I taken a concrete step to improve, manage, or compensate for it—and can I truthfully explain that step?
Can I connect it to fit? Can I identify relevant evidence or a strength that addresses what this role needs?

If a weakness directly conflicts with an essential requirement, choose another truthful, bounded limitation. For instance, poor attention to detail is a risky answer for a role where accuracy is central. A work-style preference or a skill gap you have actively addressed may be more appropriate, depending on the position and your real experience.

Build a concise answer

  1. Study the role and employer. Review the job description and identify the skills, work style, and responsibilities the position actually requires.
  2. Name one bounded limitation. Be specific and honest. Avoid a flaw that calls a core qualification into question.
  3. Describe your response. If it is true and relevant, give a brief example of how you have improved, managed, or compensated for the limitation.
  4. Reconnect to the job. Acknowledge the relevant requirement and point to a strength or evidence from your experience that shows how you can meet it.
  5. Stop there. Keep the tone calm. A short answer is usually clearer than a long confession, a list of weaknesses, or a claim that the weakness is actually a virtue.

Adaptable answer framework

Use this as a structure, not a script. Replace every bracket with details that are true for you and relevant to the position:

“An area I’ve been working on is [real limitation]. In [relevant situation], I [specific action or adjustment], and I’ve learned [result or current approach]. For this role, I understand [relevant requirement]; I can meet that need through [specific strength or evidence].”

Do not claim progress, results, or experience you cannot support. If you have not yet improved a limitation, explain the practical steps you currently take to manage it only if those steps are real.

Answers that can hurt your credibility

  • “I care too much” or “I work too hard.” These familiar humble-brags can sound evasive rather than self-aware.
  • “There’s no reason not to hire me.” The answer sidesteps the question and may come across as disingenuous.
  • A weakness that is central to the role. Do not undermine an essential qualification, such as accuracy for a job that depends on careful detail.
  • A laundry list of vague strengths. A string of positive traits does not answer what the interviewer asked.
  • A rehearsed sample copied word for word. Examples can help you prepare, but your answer should reflect your own experience and the specific job.
  • A long, uncontained confession. Acknowledge the limitation without turning the response into an account of every shortcoming you have.

Prepare for the question before the interview

Write down the role’s essential requirements, then consider which genuine limitation you could discuss without calling those requirements into doubt. Note one real example of how you handle it and one piece of evidence that demonstrates relevant fit. Practice saying the answer aloud so it sounds direct and natural rather than memorized.
