Bench’s Holiday Shutdown and Revival: What Happened to the Accounting Startup

Bench’s December 2024 shutdown disrupted access to small-business records; Employer.com announced an acquisition days later. Here’s what followed and what Bench says about operations today.

Bench abruptly shut down on December 27, 2024, disrupting customers’ access to bookkeeping records during year-end accounting and tax preparation. Employer.com announced an acquisition three days later, and Bench says service resumed in January 2025. The rescue was not the end of the story: 2025 reporting described layoffs, customer departures and tax-work delays. Bench says it is operational in 2026, but that is the company’s account—not independent confirmation of current reliability or service quality.

How Bench went from startup growth to a holiday shutdown

Founded in 2012, Bench combined bookkeeping software with bookkeepers who worked with small businesses. Its model depended on delivering reliable books and service as the company grew. TechCrunch reported in January 2025 that Bench had experienced multiple rounds of layoffs beginning in late 2022, leadership changes, and continuing execution and service problems. Former employees told the publication that some customers were still waiting for their 2023 books in September 2024; that account is attributed to those former staff, not independently established for every customer. TechCrunch’s January 3 account also reported that Adam Schlesinger became CEO in November 2024 and was brought in by investor Inovia Capital to steer a sale process. The effort had not succeeded by the time Bench closed.

What happened over the holidays

On December 27, 2024, Bench shut down and its platform became unavailable to customers during a particularly difficult moment for businesses closing their books and preparing taxes. Bench’s closure notice, as reported at the time, advised customers to consider seeking a six-month IRS extension and said records could be downloaded by December 30, with access continuing through March 2025. Those were time-limited instructions from the closure period, not current IRS deadlines or a present-day guarantee of account access. TechCrunch’s December 27 report said Bench’s website had touted more than 35,000 U.S. customers shortly before closure; the figure was preserved in an Internet Archive snapshot and should be treated as a company claim, not a verified count of active customers.

Bench’s co-founder and former CEO Ian Crosby responded on LinkedIn: “I hope the story of Bench goes on to become a warning for VCs that think they can ‘upgrade’ a company by replacing the founder. It never works.” That is Crosby’s opinion about the role of founder replacement, not proof that it caused Bench’s failure.

Employer.com announced a rescue, but the terms were limited

On December 30, 2024, San Francisco-based HR and workforce-management firm Employer.com announced that it had acquired Bench. The announcement did not disclose a purchase price. Employer.com CEO Jesse Tinsley said: “While the challenges Bench recently faced were unexpected, we recognized an extraordinary opportunity to integrate their capabilities into our own suite of solutions.” The announcement promised continued service, customer access and data preservation; those commitments should not be confused with independent verification of what every customer could access or how well service performed. Employer.com’s acquisition announcement stated the company’s position at the time.

Schlesinger later told TechCrunch: “It was only after we shut down that all the PR, including from you guys, basically made the world aware that we were for sale, and we had some great interest after that,” describing interest that emerged after the shutdown. His comment offers the CEO’s account of the sale process; it does not establish the acquisition’s price or detailed transaction terms.

What the bankruptcy filings said about the old company

Bench filed for bankruptcy in Canada on January 7, 2025. TechCrunch’s January 16 reporting on the filings said the company had $2.8 million in cash and $65.4 million in liabilities at the end of its life. TechCrunch converted the Canadian-dollar amounts at US$1 to C$1.44. The filings, as reported, also showed $51 million owed to National Bank of Canada. TechCrunch reported that Bench had raised $113 million from investors, including Shopify and Bain Capital Ventures. These figures describe Bench’s financial position, not Employer.com’s finances or the current company’s balance sheet. TechCrunch’s filing-based report provides the figures and conversion basis.

The revival did not erase service and staffing concerns

Bench says it resumed service in January 2025, but reporting in May documented further upheaval. TechCrunch reported significant layoffs, workers retained as contractors on recurring 30-day contracts, customer churn and reports that some customers’ tax work was not completed on time. Employer.com gave a separate explanation for some customer departures: it said certain customers were intentionally shed because legacy pricing and service decisions made them unprofitable. These are distinct accounts—staff reports and company explanation—not evidence that every customer experienced the same outcome. TechCrunch’s May 2025 report covers those developments.

Is Bench operating now, and can customers access their records?

Bench’s current About page says the company is fully operational and onboarding customers in 2026, and that service resumed in January 2025. This is the company’s own description. It does not independently establish current reliability, staffing, customer outcomes, record retention, or service quality. The public acquisition announcement promised access and data preservation, but a promise made during a transaction is not the same as confirmation that a particular former customer’s records remain available today. Bench’s About page is the source for its current operational claim.

If you used Bench and need old records, check your own account and saved exports first, then contact Bench directly about access to specific periods and files. Do not rely on the December 2024 download window as a current access policy. If a tax filing remains outstanding, ask your tax preparer or the IRS what applies to your situation rather than assuming the historical extension guidance still governs it.

What small-business owners should take from the episode

Bench’s closure shows why accounting continuity matters as much as bookkeeping features. When choosing or reviewing a service, a business owner can check the practical details before an outage makes them urgent:

  • Export and retention: Find out what formats you can download, whether reports and source documents are included, and how long you can retrieve them after cancellation.
  • Service scope: Clarify who prepares monthly books, which tax services are included, and what deadlines or deliverables the provider actually commits to.
  • Support model: Understand whether you have a named bookkeeper, pooled human support, or primarily self-service software, and how to escalate a missed deadline.
  • Pricing and continuity: Check what can change at renewal and what happens to records, service and support after a sale, shutdown or account termination.
  • Your own backup: Keep regular copies of essential financial statements, transaction records and tax documents in a location you control, consistent with your accountant’s recordkeeping advice.

These checks cannot prevent a provider from failing, but they can reduce dependence on a single platform when records or deadlines become critical.
