A 2021 account describes an attempted switch during a private watch sale: the seller noticed a change in weight and familiar details, then confirmed by serial number that a different watch was in his hands. He recovered the original. The headline’s $140,000 figure was not a reported loss.
How the attempted watch switch unfolded
In a report published on 4 June 2021, Time+Tide Watches recounted Singapore watch collector and trader Gautaman Senivasan’s account. A prospective buyer had contacted him about an F.P. Journe Chronomètre Bleu. Senivasan considered the buyer credible after checking his forum references and discussing expensive watches.
The buyer later visited Senivasan’s home to inspect several watches and completed a bank transfer for an IWC Pilot XVIII. While Senivasan briefly left the room to get drinks, the buyer handled the watches. Afterward, Senivasan noticed that his Patek Philippe Nautilus felt heavier than he remembered, familiar marks on its bezel were missing, and the clasp felt different. Comparing its serial number with the papers showed it was not his original watch.
According to the account, the buyer had hidden the genuine Nautilus in his bag and substituted a high-grade replica. After Senivasan confronted him, the buyer returned the genuine watch. Senivasan chose not to involve police. This is a published account of the seller’s recollection, not an independently verified legal finding. It describes an attempted substitution and recovery—not a completed $140,000 loss—and provides no evidence about how often this type of scam occurs.

How to reduce the risk in a private watch sale
Senivasan’s safeguards focus on documenting the watch and keeping track of it through the viewing. His experience also shows why a buyer’s references, apparent expertise, and an earlier completed purchase are not substitutes for direct checks.
- Document the watch before the meeting. Know each watch and its condition. Photograph existing scratches and marks, the reference and serial numbers, and the box and papers. Clear records make it easier to spot changes and check what belongs with the watch.
- Check the serial number before handing it over. Compare the watch’s serial number with its card or papers together with the prospective buyer before inspection. Senivasan described the value and limitation this way: “Sure, it’s not fool-proof but it’s another step of due diligence that should help you to know who you’re dealing with.” His account illustrates why references do not replace keeping physical control of the watches and checking their identifying details.
What this account can—and cannot—tell you
The reported sequence offers a practical warning about an in-person viewing: a seller can be distracted while multiple valuable watches are within reach, and a credible-seeming buyer can still pose a risk. The mismatch became apparent through familiar physical details and was confirmed against the papers.
