What happened at the Clive rally
Trump held the rally on Tuesday, January 27, framing the visit as part of an effort to shore up support in a Midwestern battleground. “I’m here because I love Iowa, but I’m here because we’re starting the campaign to win the midterms,” he said. Reuters reported the rally against a backdrop of protests in neighboring Minnesota after federal immigration agents fatally shot Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old U.S. citizen, on January 24. Reuters’ report, published January 27, 2026, described the shooting and protests as events surrounding the rally.
Why the economic pitch met farm-sector concerns
Weak crop prices and high operating costs
Reuters described a difficult financial backdrop for Iowa agriculture: abundant grain supplies and crop prices that had been weak for a third consecutive year, alongside high costs for fertilizer, equipment, seeds and other inputs. Corn and cattle farmer Lance Lillibridge put the strain in personal terms: “Right now everything’s just terrible; I’ve never been so cash poor in my entire life.”
Trade uncertainty and renewable-fuel delays
The report also cited uncertainty about trade with China and delays on several renewable-fuel matters. Final 2026 biofuel-blending quotas had been delayed, tax guidance for the 45Z renewable-fuel credit had not been finalized, and efforts to secure year-round sales of E15 gasoline had stalled. Trump said at the rally that congressional Republicans were close to legislation allowing year-round E15 sales; that was his description of negotiations, not a completed change in law.

What the reported figures say—and what they do not
Reuters cited a Reuters/Ipsos poll that closed January 25, 2026: 30% approved and 59% disapproved of Trump’s handling of the rising cost of living. These are the poll’s reported figures for that question, not a measure of every voter’s views on the economy.
For Iowa biodiesel, Reuters reported Iowa Renewable Fuels Association figures showing 244 million gallons produced in 2025, 31% less than in 2024. The association also said Iowa plants could produce more than 400 million gallons a year at full capacity. The capacity figure is potential output, not actual production.

The central tension in the story
The rally put a national political message beside immediate local economic pressures. Trump presented the visit as the start of a midterm campaign and pointed to possible E15 legislation, while the report’s farm-sector examples showed producers contending with low crop prices, expensive inputs, trade uncertainty and unresolved fuel-policy details. Michael Strain, director of economic policy studies at the American Enterprise Institute, assessed the economic message this way: “On the economy, they don’t have a plan; there’s nothing to announce.” That is Strain’s view, rather than a neutral finding about the administration’s policy agenda.
