Infrastructure Services Companies in the US: What They Do and How to Compare Them

Infrastructure services companies span construction, utilities, communications, transportation, water, data centers and advisory work. Learn how to define the category and compare providers without mistaking broad sector statistics for a market total.

Infrastructure services companies in the US work across several industries, not one neatly defined sector. They may design, build, install, maintain, operate or advise on assets such as power grids, roads, communications networks, water systems and data centers. Granite Construction is one named example in civil construction and materials; the available evidence does not establish a comprehensive company roster or national ranking.

What counts as an infrastructure services company?

The label describes a range of businesses involved in infrastructure across its lifecycle. Some provide engineering or project advice; others construct assets, install equipment, maintain networks or manage operations. Construction can be framed using Census NAICS codes 236 (construction of buildings), 237 (heavy and civil engineering) and 238 (specialty trade contractors), but utility, transportation, technical-services and advisory providers extend beyond those codes.

For that reason, a list of “infrastructure services companies” is only useful when it says what kind of work the companies do. A civil contractor and a power-grid maintenance provider may both serve infrastructure projects, but they are not interchangeable bidders.

Which services and companies fall into the category?

The service map below reflects the work described in the reviewed company and industry materials. Granite Construction is the only company identified by name in those materials; “not stated” means no named provider for that category was established there.

Service category Typical work Named example established
Civil construction and materials Roads, highways, bridges, airports, dams, canals, tunnels, rail, water and wastewater; aggregates, asphalt and concrete. Granite Construction. Its 2025 annual report describes these as markets or product lines and identifies the company as a diversified US civil contractor and materials producer.
Power and utility networks Transmission and distribution lines, substations, towers, poles, gas infrastructure, installation, maintenance and disaster restoration. Not stated in the reviewed sources.
Communications infrastructure Installation and maintenance of communications networks. Not stated in the reviewed sources.
Transportation, water and other critical infrastructure Construction and lifecycle work for roads, ports, transit, water and wastewater systems; advisory and delivery support may cover planning, finance, procurement, construction, operations and modernization. Not stated in the reviewed sources.
Data-center and energy infrastructure Design, construction, operation and optimization, often coordinated with power access, transmission, cooling, land, permitting and project sequencing. Not stated in the reviewed sources.

Not every provider performs construction. An advisory firm may support planning or procurement without building an asset, while a contractor may focus on installation or maintenance rather than long-term operations.

Why is the market hard to size?

Official broad-sector statistics provide economic context, but they do not add up to the market size of infrastructure services. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports output in chained 2017 dollars for broad sectors that include activity beyond infrastructure:

BLS sector 2025 output 2035 projected output
Utilities $526.6 billion $673.0 billion
Construction $1,725.8 billion $1,939.6 billion
Transportation and warehousing $1,397.4 billion $1,740.2 billion
Professional, scientific and technical services $3,229.0 billion $4,133.5 billion

The 2025 figures are BLS output estimates; the 2035 figures are BLS projections, not observed outcomes. Because these sectors are broad and overlap with the infrastructure-services label, they should not be summed and presented as a clean industry total.

Two other widely cited figures are estimates, not committed spending or measured demand. PwC estimates that $33 trillion in US infrastructure investment is needed over the next 25 years; its cited page does not characterize that amount as a government budget or funded commitment. Deloitte’s 2026 outlook forecasts that US data-center power demand could reach 176 gigawatts by 2035, up from 33 gigawatts in 2024. That forecast points to potential demand for power, grid, cooling and data-center services; it is not a measured result.

What is driving demand for infrastructure work?

  • Utility investment: Grid modernization, renewable-energy integration, replacement of aging equipment, upgrades and system hardening appear as demand drivers in contractor disclosures.
  • Network renewal: Communications infrastructure work is linked in those disclosures to rising data consumption and technology change.
  • Data-center expansion: New facilities depend on more than buildings: power access, transmission, cooling, land, permits and coordinated delivery can all shape a project.
  • Construction planning: Deloitte’s 2026 engineering and construction outlook reports that commercial and institutional planning activity increased 30% year over year in August 2025. This is an attributed industry indicator, not a measure of infrastructure-contractor revenue. The outlook describes data centers and energy infrastructure as areas of strength amid a more cautious overall commercial construction outlook.

How should you compare infrastructure providers?

Build a shortlist for the specific asset and work required rather than ranking every infrastructure provider on one scale. Compare candidates on the following points:

  1. Lifecycle role: Decide whether you need strategy, design, engineering, construction, installation, maintenance, emergency restoration, operations or asset management.
  2. Infrastructure type: Match the provider’s experience to the relevant vertical—such as power, gas, communications, transportation, civil works, water, ports, data centers or industrial facilities.
  3. Geography and delivery capacity: Check where the company operates, its local-market knowledge and its ability to staff simultaneous projects. A national footprint does not by itself establish local capability.
  4. Comparable project record and contract fit: Ask for references involving similar assets, scale, delivery models, schedules, commissioning needs and maintenance obligations.
  5. Safety, resilience and regulatory capability: Evaluate these closely for work on energized networks, public assets, water systems, critical infrastructure and emergency restoration.
  6. Technology and coordination: For interconnected or data-center projects, assess digital systems, cybersecurity, data integration, permitting, power access, land, procurement and sequencing.
  7. Financial and customer concentration: Review filings for revenue mix, backlog or awarded work, segment performance and reliance on major customers. One SEC-filed contractor disclosure illustrates the distinction: in 2025, the company reported approximately 4,000 customers across more than 44,000 projects, while its top 10 customers accounted for approximately 43% of $3.75 billion in operating revenue and one customer accounted for approximately 17%. The issuer’s name is not established in the cited excerpt, so these figures should not be attributed to a named company.

Before recommending or hiring a provider, verify its current operating footprint, licenses and qualifications, project references, safety record and financial disclosures. Company capabilities and project histories should be checked against current materials, not inferred from a broad category label.

What this company guide can—and cannot—tell you

The reviewed sources establish a useful map of the category and one named company example, not a comprehensive or independently audited national directory. They do not support a ranking of the best providers across all infrastructure types. Treat the listed service categories as a way to define the search, then verify individual firms against the project, location and qualifications you need.
