TechCrunch reported that about 250 jobs were cut, citing a source familiar with the situation. The latest context is a separate development: TechCrunch reported on September 1, 2026, that upGrad’s acquisition of Unacademy had closed; that report said no layoffs were planned at the time.
What was reported about Unacademy’s July 2024 layoffs?
TechCrunch reported that about 250 employees were laid off on July 2, 2024. The estimate came from a source familiar with the situation, not from Unacademy. The company confirmed that layoffs had occurred but did not disclose a headcount. TechCrunch’s July 2, 2024 report said the reported cuts included roughly 100 roles in marketing, business and product, and about 150 in sales.
The role breakdown, like the overall estimate, was attributed to a source familiar with the situation. It should not be read as a company-confirmed tally.
What reason did Unacademy give?
An unnamed Unacademy spokesperson told Business Standard that the company had undertaken a restructuring to streamline operations and improve business efficiency, with a focus on sustainable growth and profitability. The spokesperson said some roles had been affected and that the company would support impacted individuals during the transition. Business Standard’s July 2024 report published the statement.

How did the cuts fit into Unacademy’s earlier workforce reductions?
TechCrunch described the reported 2024 layoffs as part of a longer cost-cutting period and put the company’s cumulative job cuts at about 2,000 since the second half of 2022. That is a publication-reported estimate, not a total confirmed by Unacademy.
Business Standard separately reported, citing sources, that Unacademy’s workforce had fallen to fewer than 3,000 from about 6,000 in early 2022. Those figures are also reported estimates, not an official company headcount. Because these totals come from reporting rather than a company disclosure, they provide context but do not establish a precise employee count before or after the July 2024 cuts.

What is the later upGrad acquisition context?
In a report dated September 1, 2026, TechCrunch said upGrad’s acquisition of Unacademy had closed in an all-stock deal valued at ₹19.55 billion, or about $206 million. TechCrunch compared that reported deal value with Unacademy’s reported 2021 peak valuation of $3.44 billion, describing the sale value as about 94% below the peak. These are figures attached to two different dates and circumstances, not a current valuation estimate for the business. TechCrunch’s September 2026 acquisition report also said the deal covered the wider group, including PrepLadder and Graphy.
According to a person familiar with the matter cited by TechCrunch, the Unacademy brand would be retained and no layoffs were planned after the acquisition at that time. The report put the group’s workforce at about 1,000. The no-layoff statement described plans as of that report; it is not a guarantee about future staffing decisions.

In July 2024, reporting had also mentioned potential merger discussions with K12 Techno, which owned Orchid International at the time. That was contemporaneous reporting, distinct from the later reported upGrad acquisition.

Unacademy’s help page says the company periodically reviews business areas and educator roles, and that learners are offered alternative educators and courses when an educator engagement ends. This information concerns educator arrangements and learner continuity; it does not verify the number of employee layoffs reported in July 2024.
