The Income Tax Department’s Mumbai sports-quota recruitment for 291 posts is closed. Reports say registration began on 26 December 2023, but disagree on whether applications closed on 19 or 21 January 2024. It is a past recruitment drive, not an open opportunity.
Which recruitment did the 291-post figure refer to?
The figure refers to a 2023–24 recruitment drive by the Income Tax Department in Mumbai for sportspersons. The Times of India and Scroll reported the same total and five post categories. It should not be confused with separate sports-quota recruitment notices issued by other regions.
Reported vacancies by post
Scroll reported this distribution. The Mumbai department notice was not available to independently confirm the post-wise numbers.
| Post | Reported vacancies |
|---|---|
| Income Tax Inspector | 14 |
| Stenographer Grade-II | 18 |
| Tax Assistant | 119 |
| Multi Tasking Staff | 137 |
| Canteen Attendant | 3 |
| Total | 291 |
These figures were reported by Scroll in December 2023; The Times of India also reported 291 vacancies across the same five categories.

When did applications open and close?
Both news reports say registration began on 26 December 2023. They disagree about the closing date: Scroll reported 19 January 2024, while The Times of India reported 21 January 2024. Without the original Mumbai notice or a corrigendum, neither date can be treated as confirmed. In either account, the application period ended in January 2024.
Can you still apply?
No. This was a time-limited 2023–24 recruitment, and its application window has passed. A current vacancy must be checked against the official notice for the relevant region and recruitment cycle. The Income Tax Department’s recruitment listing includes later regional notices, but those do not reopen or replace the Mumbai drive.

What were the eligibility and selection rules?
The available reports do not establish the Mumbai-specific age limits, educational qualifications, eligible sports or achievement levels, fee, required documents, selection process, or pay for each post. Those details require the original Mumbai notification. Do not assume that a notice from another Income Tax region supplied the same terms.
As general policy context, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports describes central-government recruitment of sportspersons under Department of Personnel and Training instructions dated 3 October 2013, 18 November 2022, and 4 March 2024. It says the framework provides for reservation of up to 5% of direct-recruit vacancies in Group C and erstwhile Group D for meritorious sportspersons. This general framework does not establish the specific terms of the Mumbai recruitment.
