Recompose currently identifies Seattle as its only facility. The company has said it wants to grow beyond Washington, but its public description of that plan is not evidence that another facility or partner site is open. For people considering the service, the distinction matters: Recompose says out-of-state clients can arrange transportation to Seattle, while expansion elsewhere depends on more than a state making human composting legal.
What Recompose means by growing beyond Seattle
In its March 2023 announcement, Recompose described two paths for growth: opening and operating additional green funeral homes, and licensing its proprietary technology to partners. Those were plans, not confirmation that a named partner or additional location has since launched. Recompose’s current FAQ identifies Seattle as its only facility and says it will share expansion news as plans develop.
A May 2026 Puget Sound Business Journal feature preview indicates that the company’s growth is a subject of coverage, but the accessible preview does not establish a new facility, partner, or market. The confirmed status remains the one Recompose gives directly: its only identified facility is in Seattle.
Recompose reported serving more than 250 families and having more than 1,300 Precompose members in March 2023. Those are historical company figures, not current totals.

How human composting works at Recompose
Recompose describes its process as natural microbial decomposition. Staff place the body in a vessel with a carefully balanced mix of plant materials. The mix is calibrated to manage carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and moisture; staff rotate the vessel to aerate it. The conditions support microbes as they break down organic material.
- Vessel stage: The body and plant material remain in a vessel for about five to seven weeks, according to Recompose’s process guide.
- Bone processing: Bone and teeth minerals do not fully decompose during the vessel stage. Equipment reduces the bones, and the resulting material is returned to the compost.
- Curing: The material cures in an aerated bin for about three to five weeks.
- Testing and return: Recompose says it follows Washington compost testing regulations and screens non-organic implants for recycling where possible. The company describes the overall process as typically taking two to three months; this is a typical range, not a guaranteed completion date.
Recompose reports that each case yields roughly one cubic yard, or about 1,000 pounds, of soil. Families may take some or all of the material home, or donate what remains to conservation projects. The company advises against using it around tender annuals and recommends care around young plants. These process, timeline, and output details are from Recompose’s process guide.

Can you use Recompose if you live outside Washington?
Yes, according to Recompose: its FAQ says about one third of its clients come from out of state, and staff help coordinate transportation to Seattle. A client does not necessarily need to live or die in a state where human composting is legal to arrange the service, but transport and regulatory details are situation-specific. Confirm current arrangements directly with the provider before making plans.
Recompose also says its Precompose prepayment membership will be transferable to the nearest company facility if additional locations open. That is a future-facing policy tied to locations opening; it does not mean a nearer facility is available now. See the company’s FAQ for its current service and membership information.

Where human composting is legal—and why that does not guarantee local service
Recompose’s state guide lists 14 states as having legalized human composting through September 2025: Washington, Colorado, Oregon, Vermont, California, New York, Nevada, Maryland, Delaware, Minnesota, Maine, Arizona, Georgia, and New Jersey. This is the company’s dated state-status summary, not a substitute for checking current state law and rules. Its guide also records 2026 legislative activity for Utah and Illinois and a New Hampshire bill progressing as of December 2025; legislative activity is not the same as an enacted law or an operating service.
Legal permission is only one stage. Recompose says states commonly need to adopt implementing rules after a law passes, and estimates that this regulatory interval can range from six months to five years before the company can apply for a license. That is Recompose’s stated range, not a universal statutory deadline. Licensing, a decision to build or partner locally, and the practical arrangements for providing the service must follow. For its current status notes and explanation, consult Recompose’s human-composting legality guide.

What the environmental figures do—and do not—show
Recompose’s environmental information reports that a model by Dr. Troy Hottle estimated 0.84 to 1.4 metric tons of carbon dioxide saved per case compared with conventional burial or cremation options. The company also reports 87% less energy use than cremation. These are company-presented figures based on a cited model, not a universal independent finding; the company’s page does not clearly state a publication year for the underlying model. They should be read as estimates with a defined comparison, not as a guarantee of the impact of every individual arrangement. Recompose presents the figures on its process and environmental information page.
