The house itself is well documented; the “apocalypse-proof” label is not.
The Utah home behind the bunker reports
A Utah real-estate listing describes a Cottonwood Heights single-family home measuring 12,702 square feet, with five bedrooms, seven bathrooms and 6.75 acres. It records a sale on February 20, 2018, but does not name the buyer or disclose the sale price. The listing therefore establishes the property’s recorded characteristics, not by itself that Malone bought it.
That connection comes from news coverage. TMZ reported in September 2019 that Malone bought the property in early 2018. A July 2024 Cat Country Utah article, citing property records, said it was purchased for just under $3.1 million under the LLC “Wow Cool House”; it described the home as roughly 13,000 square feet on seven acres, with five bedrooms and seven bathrooms. TMZ’s report and Cat Country Utah’s account provide the reported link to Malone, while the listing does not identify him as buyer.
Why the reported price varies
The price is not consistent across coverage, and the available sources do not resolve the difference. TMZ put the reported purchase at about $3 million in 2019; Cat Country Utah said just under $3.1 million in 2024, citing property records. FOX 13 called it a $4 million mansion in 2020 without explaining whether that figure was a purchase price, valuation or shorthand. FOX 13’s account does not clarify its basis, so “around $3 million” is the more cautious description of the reported purchase.

What Malone said he planned
Malone’s public comments describe an intention, not a finished construction project. In a 2018 Rolling Stone profile relayed by Hypebeast, he said, “I’m gonna put in, like, 30 bunk beds.” TMZ later reported plans for a recording studio, 30 bunk beds and an underground bunker.
In remarks quoted by Hypebeast from the H3 Podcast, Malone said: “I’m building it underground. It’s going to be fun until the world ends. But whenever the world ends, it’s going to be functional.” Taste of Country quoted him saying it was “gonna be fun until the world ends, but when the world ends, it’s gonna be functional,” and noted he had not disclosed specific end-of-world amenities. These are statements of intent; they do not verify that the beds or shelter were installed. Hypebeast’s 2018 report and Taste of Country’s coverage preserve the attributed remarks.

Does the house really have a bunker?
The available reporting does not confirm that the planned bunker was built. Spin wrote in September 2019 that it was unclear whether construction had taken place. Architectural Digest later recapped the interviews and property but did not document a completed shelter or its technical capabilities. Spin’s report and Architectural Digest’s account do not establish completion, design, capacity or protective performance.
Local coverage has also described bulletproof glass and a security system, but those details are secondary reporting rather than specifications verified in the real-estate listing. Neither those reports nor Malone’s comments provide an independent inspection or define a hazard the shelter could withstand. “Apocalypse-proof” is therefore a headline-style characterization, not a demonstrated property feature.

What the public record does—and does not—show
- Established by the listing: the Cottonwood Heights property’s recorded size, acreage, room count and February 2018 sale date.
- Reported by news outlets: Malone’s connection to the home, a purchase amount around $3 million, and his stated plans for an underground bunker and 30 bunk beds.
- Not established in the available accounts: whether the bunker was completed, its specifications or capacity, and whether it could protect occupants against any defined threat.
A celebrity’s stated shelter plans and a technically evaluated protective structure are different things. The public accounts support the former; they do not provide evidence for the latter.
