Researchers look for bubble-like crypto markets using different tests, most notably statistical tests for explosive price behavior and models that fit accelerating price patterns. Some also study social-media text. These methods can help classify past market behavior or flag patterns worth examining; none, by itself, establishes that a coin is in a bubble now or reliably predicts when a crash will happen.
What does “bubble” mean in a crypto study?
There is no single agreed definition or threshold for a cryptocurrency bubble. A paper’s result depends on what it calls a bubble, which data it uses, and the period it examines. One study may test whether prices show statistically explosive behavior; another may identify bubble spans from price patterns or social-media data. Those results are related, but they are not interchangeable.
When reading a claim that Bitcoin or another asset “was in a bubble,” check the paper’s operational test and sample period. A retrospective classification is a finding about the data and method used in that study—not a standing diagnosis of the asset or a forecast of its next move.
Which methods do researchers use?
A 2020 systematic review in Research in International Business and Finance identifies Augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF) methods and Log-Periodic Power Law (LPPL) approaches as frequently used in research on cryptocurrency price bubbles. A separate 2022 NAACL paper treats bubble detection as identifying spans of interest and explores social-media text. Each approach answers a different question.

| Approach | Signal and data | What it can help identify | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| ADF-family tests | Price-series statistics; the particular test specification and price data matter. | Whether a series exhibits statistically explosive behavior under the chosen test. | That every detected episode meets a universal definition of a bubble, or that a crash will follow on a particular date. |
| LPPL approaches | Price patterns fitted to a model of accelerating dynamics. | Whether a price history resembles the pattern the model is designed to examine. | That the fitted pattern guarantees a reversal, or accurately times one. |
| Text or sentiment analysis | Social-media posts and related labels, sometimes alongside market data. | Whether text signals are associated with bubble spans in a given dataset and task. | That social-media activity predicts a bubble or crash in other assets, periods, or markets. |
The comparison is about the kind of evidence each method uses, not a ranking of accuracy. The 2020 review covers study-specific findings about Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. It also notes that academic evidence for several named assets was limited after early 2018. Those historical classifications should not be converted into present-tense claims about those assets.
What the CryptoBubbles dataset adds
The 2022 NAACL paper introduced the CryptoBubbles dataset for a multi-span identification task. It covers more than 400 cryptocurrencies across nine exchanges over five years and contains over two million tweets. That scale gives researchers material for examining text and market signals, but dataset size alone does not show that posts can forecast a bubble or the timing of a crash.

How can you tell whether a crypto market might be in a bubble?
There is no dependable single indicator for an individual reader to apply as a yes-or-no test. A more careful assessment asks what the signal measures and whether the evidence supports the claim being made.
- Identify the claim. Is it saying that prices rose rapidly, that a statistical test detected explosive behavior, that a paper classified a historical span as a bubble, or that a crash is imminent? These are different claims.
- Check the method. Look for the operational definition and test used. A result from an ADF-family test, an LPPL fit, or social-media analysis should be described in the terms of that method—not treated as a universal bubble threshold.
- Check the sample. Note the asset, exchanges, observations, sampling frequency, and historical window. Findings from an older sample do not automatically describe today’s market.
- Check coverage and data quality. Ask whether the data cover the venues and assets relevant to the claim and whether missing observations or limited transparency could affect the result.
- Separate detection from prediction. Evidence that a pattern occurred or was classified in past data is not, without additional validated forecasting evidence, proof that it will recur or when it will end.
In practice, a price signal is only one part of risk. The ECB’s May 2025 Financial Stability Review discusses volatility, limited transparency, liquidity and maturity mismatches, leverage, concentration, links with traditional finance, and data gaps. It describes Bitcoin as highly volatile and speculative. That is a discussion of risks and vulnerabilities, not an estimate that Bitcoin—or another named crypto-asset—is currently in a bubble.

Can Bitcoin be in a bubble now?
Bitcoin can be examined using the same kinds of methods as other crypto-assets, but the studies in the 2020 systematic review provide historical, sample-bound findings rather than a current diagnosis. The ECB’s May 2025 analysis supplies more recent risk context, but it does not measure the probability that Bitcoin is in a bubble. The cited evidence therefore does not support a definitive present-day yes-or-no answer.
For a current claim to be meaningful, it should name the data window, method, and operational definition, and distinguish a detected pattern from a forecast. A headline that labels Bitcoin a bubble without those details is more conclusive than the evidence described here permits.

Can anyone predict when a crypto bubble will burst?
The methods described above can detect or classify patterns in data; that is not the same as reliably forecasting the date of a crash. The reviewed evidence does not establish ADF, LPPL, or sentiment analysis as dependable crash-timing tools. A warning signal may warrant closer scrutiny, but it is not a validated promise of what happens next.
That distinction matters for personal finances. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission says: “Buying digital coins or tokens only because you expect to sell them at a higher price later is the definition of speculation and carries considerable risk, regardless of how good a white paper, application or business plan sounds.” A bubble label cannot remove that uncertainty or substitute for considering the risk of loss.

How should official warnings affect your interpretation?
Official warnings address risk and investor protection, not necessarily whether an asset meets an academic bubble test. Keep their scope and date clear:
- European Union: ESMA’s warning, released through the EU Publications Office on March 5, 2025, followed significant and sudden price increases in certain crypto-assets in November 2024. It urges careful consideration before financial decisions and says the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA) enhances protections for covered crypto-assets and service providers. Coverage is not identical for every asset or service.
- United States: A 2023 Government Accountability Office report found gaps in federal regulatory authority over certain blockchain-related financial products, including the spot market for crypto-assets that are not securities. That is a dated US oversight finding, not a complete description of law in 2026 or a statement about regulation worldwide.
- Fraud warning signs: A joint SEC and CFTC staff alert warns that fraudulent digital-asset trading websites may promise high guaranteed returns with little or no risk. Such promises are warning signs of possible fraud; they are not evidence that a market is in a bubble.
Warnings can also influence investor behavior without serving as market forecasts. A December 2021 study by Ebers and Thomsen, based on an October 2020 survey experiment in Germany, the UK, France, and Italy, reported the strongest impact for privacy warnings. That finding concerns responses in that survey, not the ability of warnings to predict prices or crashes.
