Why Juneyao Airlines Delayed Its Boeing 787-9 Delivery—and When It Arrived

Juneyao Airlines’ reported delay was tied to the US-China tariff escalation in April 2025, but it did not mean the airline permanently refused the aircraft. Bloomberg reported the delay on April 11, citing unnamed people familiar with the matter; Reuters later reported that Boeing delivered a new 787-9 to Juneyao on June 14, citing Chinese outlet Yicai.

Why was Juneyao’s Boeing 787-9 delivery delayed?

Bloomberg reported on April 11, 2025, that Juneyao planned to hold off on accepting a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner expected in about three weeks. The report attributed the decision to President Donald Trump’s tariffs on China and China’s retaliatory tariffs on US-made goods. Bloomberg based the account on unnamed people familiar with the matter and said Juneyao had not immediately responded to a request for comment. Bloomberg’s April 11 report put the aircraft’s value at about $120 million. That was a reported value—not a confirmed purchase price or an estimate of tariff paid.

Did Juneyao eventually receive the plane?

Yes, according to a later report. On June 14, 2025, Reuters said Boeing had delivered a new 787-9 to Juneyao, citing Chinese media outlet Yicai. Reuters reported that Boeing had suspended new aircraft deliveries to China in April as the tariff dispute intensified. At the end of May, Boeing said deliveries would resume in June after tariffs were temporarily scaled back for 90 days. Reuters also described a tariff-rate framework reached in trade negotiations in London. Boeing and Juneyao did not immediately respond to requests for comment about Yicai’s delivery report. Reuters’ June 14 account is the key update: the reported April delay was followed by a reported June delivery.

How the Juneyao report fit Boeing’s wider China delivery disruption

The Juneyao episode occurred amid a broader pause in deliveries to Chinese airlines. On April 23, 2025, the Associated Press reported that Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg said Chinese airlines had “stopped taking delivery of aircraft due to the the tariff environment.” AP preserved the repeated “the” in its transcription. Ortberg said Boeing was considering redirecting aircraft to other interested buyers:

“It’s an unfortunate situation, but we have many customers who want near-term deliveries, so we plan to redirect the supply to the stable demand, and we’re not going to continue to build aircraft for customers who will not take them,” he said during a conference call with analysts.

That was Boeing’s broader response to customers not taking deliveries; it does not establish that Juneyao’s particular 787-9 was redirected. Reuters later reported a 787-9 delivery to Juneyao.

AP also reported two dated indicators of Boeing’s exposure to China: the company planned to complete 50 orders for Chinese airlines in 2025, and CFO Brian West estimated that China represented about 10% of Boeing’s $500 billion order backlog at that time. These were statements about 2025 plans and the backlog then, not current figures. West said, “Given our position as a significant U.S. exporter, free trade policy across commercial aerospace remains very important to us.” AP’s April 23 report covered the comments.

What the reports do—and do not—establish

  • Delay: Bloomberg’s April 11 account relied on unnamed people familiar with the matter; it was not a public Juneyao confirmation.
  • Delivery: Reuters reported the June 14 delivery based on Yicai, while noting that Boeing and Juneyao did not immediately comment on that report.
  • Aircraft value: Bloomberg’s approximate $120 million figure does not establish the final transaction amount or any tariff bill.
  • Tariff policy: The reported 90-day reduction and London framework describe the 2025 context. They do not establish tariff rates or delivery conditions in October 2026.
