The longer powertrain term is not full-vehicle coverage, and a later private owner generally receives 5 years/60,000 miles of powertrain coverage instead. The applicable model-year handbook and vehicle history determine what remains on a particular car.
Hyundai warranty coverage at a glance
These are summary terms in Hyundai Motor America’s 2026 Owner’s Handbook for the U.S. They are separate warranty categories, not one promise that every vehicle component is covered for the longest listed period.
| Warranty category | 2026 handbook summary | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| New Vehicle Limited Warranty | 5 years/60,000 miles | Often called the comprehensive warranty; exact covered parts and conditions are in the handbook. |
| Powertrain, original owner | 10 years/100,000 miles | Applies to the original owner of qualifying vehicles; it covers selected components, not the entire vehicle. |
| Powertrain, subsequent owner | 5 years/60,000 miles | The longer original-owner powertrain term does not automatically pass to a later private owner. |
| Hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and electric direct-energy components | 10 years/100,000 miles | Component-specific rules apply; consult the applicable handbook. |
| Anti-perforation | 7 years/unlimited mileage | A separate category from powertrain coverage. |
| Federal emissions, specified components | 8 years/80,000 miles | California-specific requirements and parts are addressed separately. |
Hyundai’s 2026 handbook and official warranty materials describe additional categories, including adjustments, paint, air-conditioner refrigerant charge, audio/navigation/Bluetooth equipment, the 12-volt battery, emissions, replacement parts, and accessories. Each has its own parts, time, mileage, and regional terms. Do not assume the powertrain duration applies to any of them.
What the 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty covers
Hyundai’s warranty overview describes the longer powertrain term for qualifying 2004-and-newer model-year vehicles as applying to selected engine and transmission/transaxle components that are defective in material or factory workmanship under normal use and maintenance. It excludes commercial-use vehicles. The exact component list and exclusions are controlled by the relevant handbook, including its “What Is Not Covered” provisions.

That means the headline is not a guarantee that every mechanical failure, wear item, maintenance issue, or repair is paid for. A component must fall within the applicable covered list and meet the warranty’s conditions. Hyundai’s warranty overview also states: “Coverage applies to original owner only, effective with 2004 model year and newer model-year vehicles.”
What happens if you sell your Hyundai while it is under warranty?
Hyundai defines the original owner for 2004-and-newer model years as the first retail purchaser who took delivery on the vehicle’s first date of use. If the vehicle is sold during the longer powertrain term, Hyundai’s Help Center says that powertrain coverage becomes 5 years/60,000 miles for a subsequent owner. Its FAQ says other warranty terms, including roadside assistance, remain unchanged.

So a used Hyundai may still have meaningful factory coverage, but the 10-year/100,000-mile original-owner powertrain term should not be treated as automatically inherited. To estimate what remains, establish the vehicle’s original in-service date, odometer reading, ownership and use history, then check the precise model-year handbook. Hyundai’s Help Center addresses both “What happens if I sell my vehicle while it’s still under warranty?” and “What is the definition of Original Owner?”
How ordinary used coverage differs from Hyundai CPO coverage
A non-certified used Hyundai follows the applicable warranty transfer terms. Hyundai Certified Used Vehicles are a separate program with additional stated coverage, and not every used Hyundai qualifies or receives it.

| Vehicle status | Coverage described by Hyundai | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| New Hyundai | 2026 summary lists 5 years/60,000 miles for the New Vehicle Limited Warranty and 10 years/100,000 miles of powertrain coverage for the original owner. | Vehicle’s model-year handbook, in-service date, use, and component-specific terms. |
| Non-CPO used Hyundai | Subsequent-owner powertrain summary is 5 years/60,000 miles; other applicable warranty terms remain subject to their own conditions. | What remains based on first in-service date and mileage, and the car’s ownership and use history. |
| Hyundai Certified Used Vehicle | Hyundai advertises the remainder of the original 5-year/60,000-mile comprehensive warranty and a separate 10-year/100,000-mile CPO powertrain limited warranty, measured from the original in-service date and zero miles. The CPO powertrain coverage has a $50 deductible per repair visit. | That the individual vehicle qualifies, the current CPO provisions, and the written terms and limitations. |
The CPO terms above are those stated on Hyundai’s Certified Used Vehicles program page; eligibility and limitations apply. A CPO warranty is distinct from the ordinary transfer of a new-vehicle warranty.
Hybrid and electric Hyundai coverage
The 2026 handbook summary lists 10 years/100,000 miles for hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and electric direct-energy components. Hyundai’s service warranty information also describes coverage for hybrid/electric batteries and system components, including a battery-capacity condition. Which parts and conditions apply depends on the vehicle and warranty terms, so use the model-year handbook for a specific battery or system question rather than assuming all electrified-vehicle components share one duration.

How to check coverage on a specific vehicle
- Identify the model year and market. Confirm the vehicle is covered by Hyundai Motor America’s U.S. terms; these figures should not be applied to vehicles distributed or normally operated outside the United States.
- Find the original in-service date and current mileage. Warranty periods are tied to the vehicle’s first use and mileage, not simply the date you bought it used.
- Establish ownership and use. Determine whether you are the original retail owner, whether the vehicle has been sold, and whether it has been used commercially.
- Use the correct handbook. Review the model-year handbook’s coverage, component lists, and exclusions for the particular repair category.
- Confirm uncertain details with Hyundai or a dealer. For an individual vehicle, provide its VIN and records and request confirmation of applicable remaining coverage and any relevant program terms.
Hyundai’s warranty information and Help Center give the general framework, but they cannot establish every vehicle-specific, state, lease, or prior-use exception without the vehicle’s details. The applicable 2026 handbook and signed program agreements govern an individual case.
