To start affiliate marketing, choose an audience you can serve with useful, accurate content, select a publishing channel, and find programs whose current terms permit that channel and your location. Then publish original material, disclose commissions clearly wherever endorsements appear, and track results without assuming that traffic or income is guaranteed. There is no established universal startup cost, earning average, or best channel for beginners.

What affiliate marketing is—and what it is not

Affiliate marketing is a commercial arrangement: you publish content that refers people to a merchant, and the merchant may pay you when a reader takes an eligible action, such as making a purchase. The specific action, attribution rules, commission, and payment conditions depend on the program agreement.

It is not guaranteed passive income. The official guidance cited here sets disclosure and content-quality expectations; it does not establish typical earnings, conversion rates, startup budgets, or a time-to-profit estimate. Treat any such figures as claims that need a credible source and methodology, not as a forecast for your project.

How to start affiliate marketing, step by step

1. Choose an audience and a useful subject

Start with a group of people and a topic where you can provide accurate, genuinely useful information. Ask whether the intended audience would benefit from your work, whether your site or channel has a coherent purpose, and what you can add beyond material already available. Google’s people-first content guidance frames these as quality questions, not a recipe for ranking.

A niche should be narrow enough to guide what you publish but broad enough to support useful topics. Do not choose a subject solely because you have heard it pays well: the sources here do not establish a best niche or a reliable commission benchmark.

2. Pick a channel that fits your audience

You can publish through a website, video, newsletter, or social channel. There is no universally best choice established by the official guidance reviewed here. Consider where your intended audience looks for help, which format lets you explain the subject well, and whether you can produce useful material consistently.

Before building around a channel, check that each affiliate program permits it and permits your location. Program eligibility, channel restrictions, and local rules vary; a program that works for one publisher may not work for another.

3. Check program terms before applying

Research merchants or affiliate networks relevant to your audience, then read the current agreement rather than relying on a commission-rate summary or an old article. Check:

  • Eligible countries, channels, and application requirements.
  • What action earns a commission and how referrals are attributed.
  • Payment thresholds, schedules, and other payment conditions.
  • Restrictions on placements, claims, brand use, or promotional methods.
  • Disclosure obligations and rules for the products or services being promoted.

For example, Amazon Associates disclosure requirements include program-specific wording and link-level disclosure for the U.S. program. This makes Amazon an example, not a universal recommendation; check the terms for your marketplace, category, and channel before joining or using its wording.

4. Publish original material that earns the recommendation

Give readers a reason to trust and use your content beyond the presence of an affiliate link. Google says copied merchant descriptions or reviews with no meaningful added value can fall under thin affiliation. Useful affiliate pages can instead provide original analysis, meaningful product information, comparisons, navigation, or testing and ratings when those are real and relevant. See Google’s thin-affiliation guidance.

Describe your basis accurately. Do not call something a hands-on review if you did not use it, imply a test you did not conduct, or present a product claim you cannot substantiate. The Federal Trade Commission says: “Under the law, claims in advertisements must be truthful, cannot be deceptive or unfair, and must be evidence-based.” See the FTC’s Advertising and Marketing guidance.

5. Add reader-facing disclosures and search markup

Tell readers about the commercial relationship clearly and where they encounter the endorsement. The FTC’s affiliate-marketing FAQ says, “You should disclose your relationship to the retailer clearly and conspicuously on your site, so readers can decide how much weight to give your endorsement.” A plain explanation such as “I get commissions for purchases made through links in this post” can communicate the relationship when it accurately describes it. See the FTC’s Endorsement Guides FAQ.

For a website, place the disclosure near the relevant content or links, where it is easy to notice. For social content, make it visible with the endorsement itself. A disclosure only on a profile page, at the end of a post or video, or behind a “more” action may be missed. The FTC guidance is U.S.-focused; other countries may have additional or different requirements, and U.S. rules can apply to posts made abroad when effects on U.S. consumers are reasonably foreseeable.

If you use Amazon’s U.S. Associates program, its help page requires the program identification statement: “As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.” Amazon also calls for clear, conspicuous disclosure near a link or product review. This is a program requirement, not a general FTC-mandated phrase; verify current marketplace rules and the applicable agreement.

For affiliate links on a website, Google Search Central asks site owners to mark them with rel="sponsored". This search markup is separate from the reader-facing disclosure; using one does not replace the other. Google’s outbound-link qualification guidance explains the attribute.

6. Review performance and improve the work

Use measures that help you understand whether your content serves its audience and whether the program reports eligible referrals or actions. Improve pages when readers need clearer explanations, better comparisons, or more useful navigation. Do not treat a ranking, conversion, or earnings outcome as assured: neither FTC nor Google guidance promises those results.

How to choose a channel or program

Compare options against your own audience and constraints rather than looking for a universal winner.

Decision What to compare
Publishing channel Audience fit; whether you can create the format consistently; program permission; where disclosures will appear; measurement needs; and the time and resources required.
Affiliate program Country and channel eligibility; relevance to your subject; approval conditions; attribution and payment terms; placement and claim restrictions; disclosure duties; and available support or tools.

Verify each item in the current official program terms. The sources cited here do not support a cross-program ranking, universal commission comparison, or recommendation of a paid tool or course as necessary.

Do you need a website?

No single source here establishes that a website is required for affiliate marketing. Some programs may allow other channels, while others limit where links can appear. Check the terms for every program you consider before publishing links on a social account, in a newsletter, in video descriptions, or elsewhere.

A website can give you a place to organize enduring articles and apply link markup, but it also requires time and resources to create and maintain. Choose it when it suits your audience and publishing plan—not because affiliate marketing universally requires one.

Common beginner mistakes to avoid

  • Publishing links before checking the agreement: eligibility and channel permissions differ by program, locale, and merchant.
  • Hiding the commission relationship: place a clear disclosure where readers encounter the endorsement, not only on a profile or at the end.
  • Copying merchant copy as a review: add useful original information instead of repeating a product description without value for the reader.
  • Overstating experience or product claims: only describe personal use, testing, or performance that you can substantiate.
  • Treating markup as disclosure: rel="sponsored" signals a link attribute to search systems; it does not explain the commercial relationship to readers.
  • Relying on unsupported income promises: no defensible beginner income, startup-cost, conversion-rate, or time-to-profit figure is established by the official sources cited here.
