Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk) permanently closed on September 30, 2026. Workers can still take steps to confirm payment settings, monitor remaining submissions, and save records; requesters have separate closeout tasks for pending work, billing, and prepaid balances. The service is no longer a place to find or post new HITs.
What MTurk’s closure means
Amazon’s closure FAQ says MTurk is permanently closed as of September 30, 2026. The closure also applies to SageMaker Ground Truth and Amazon Augmented AI, and MTurk Worker is no longer available for labeling jobs or human-review workflows.

Older MTurk pages describe how workers searched for, accepted, completed, and submitted HITs—individual, self-contained virtual tasks—and how requesters used the service for annotation, surveys, categorization, moderation, and data gathering. Those pages explain the former workflow, not a way to start new work or campaigns now. The closure FAQ takes precedence over the legacy How It Works page.

Verify payment settings and track remaining earnings
By October 30, 2026, verify your payment method and transfer frequency in the Worker Portal. Amazon says remaining completed and approved HITs will be paid on the normal scheduled disbursement. Check your account rather than assuming an old general description of payment options applies to your individual settings.

- Amazon.com Gift Cards never expire and carry no fees.
- Multiple gift card designs and denominations to choose from.
- Redeemable towards millions of items store-wide at Amazon.com or certain affiliated websites.

- No returns and no refunds on Gift Cards.
The legacy Worker Help page describes scheduled transfers every 3, 7, 14, or 30 days and payments in U.S. dollars. It says U.S. workers could select a U.S. bank account or Amazon gift card, while some international workers were eligible for bank transfers. Treat those descriptions as historical guidance; the closure FAQ directs workers to confirm their own preferences in the portal.
Keep an eye on submitted work and decisions
Requesters have through October 30, 2026 to approve or reject completed HITs submitted on or after September 30. Work left untouched is auto-approved. If you have submissions awaiting a decision, check their status and retain relevant details while account records remain available.

Save transaction records and tax documents
Transaction history remains accessible until January 28, 2027. Download or otherwise retain the records you need before that date. Amazon says tax-related documents will continue to be distributed through its established processes and deadlines. For tax questions, the Worker Help page recommends consulting an accountant, tax preparer, or IRS resources; it does not provide tax advice.

Check payment details, prepaid balances, and billing
Verify your payment details by October 30, 2026. Amazon says prepaid balances should be fully refunded within 30 days of the September 30 closure. Incomplete HITs that were not submitted expired, and final AWS bills are due in upcoming billing cycles. Review your requester account and billing records for the amounts and timing that apply to you.
Understand old pricing only as historical context
Before closure, MTurk’s pricing page described worker rewards plus a 20% fee on reward and bonus amounts, an additional 20% fee for tasks with 10 or more assignments, and possible qualification fees. These are historical terms, not a current quote or an available campaign price. The former use cases included AI/ML data annotation, surveys and market research, data cleaning and categorization, content moderation, and data gathering.

What legacy worker advice is still useful elsewhere
MTurk’s former safety guidance remains relevant as general caution when evaluating other online task services, though it does not make MTurk available again. Read task instructions carefully, avoid work you cannot complete correctly, and return a task rather than submitting inaccurate work. Do not give passwords or personal information to suspicious tasks; report suspicious or policy-violating content through the platform’s reporting process where one exists.
No particular replacement service is established here as an equivalent. Availability, eligibility, task supply, payment methods, and protections vary by provider and location, so verify those details directly before relying on another service for income.
