To get a legitimate student email address for free, enroll at a school and follow its official account setup instructions. The school—not Gmail, Outlook, or a software company—creates or activates the mailbox, and the exact steps depend on the institution.
How to get your school email account
- Check your school’s official portal. Look on the admissions or IT website for “student email,” “account activation,” or “IT account.” The school will say which enrollment step triggers account creation; it may be application, admission, enrollment confirmation, or course registration.
- Complete the required registration or activation. Some schools provision email automatically after registration. Others require you to activate a campus login or single sign-on account first. Use only the credentials and directions supplied by the school.
- Wait for the account to be provisioned. Timing varies. The University of Surrey, for example, says its students should wait 24–48 hours after completing online registration before logging in; that estimate applies to Surrey, not to all schools. See Surrey’s email setup guidance.
- Sign in through the school’s stated email service. The school’s instructions should identify the login page, address format, and whether you use a campus username or another sign-in method.
- Contact campus IT or admissions if access fails. Ask whether your registration or activation is complete and request a reset if needed. Do not pay a third party claiming to sell a school-issued address.
Why the steps differ by school
There is no universal “create an .edu email” form. Each institution sets its own eligibility, account trigger, activation process, and timing. The University of Surrey says its IT account is automatically created after successful online registration. Indiana University says most students receive instructions to set up a computing account shortly after admission, and that account includes IU Email. Colorado State University links its email setup to activating a NetID, which establishes the Office 365 account. These are examples, not instructions that apply to every school.

A personal email address or software offer is not a student mailbox
A free Gmail or Outlook account is a personal account, not an official school mailbox. Likewise, signing up for student software does not create an institutional email address. Education offers generally require an eligible school email address or a separate verification of genuine student status.
Microsoft 365 Education
Microsoft says eligible students and educators can get Office 365 A1 free with an eligible education email address. Eligibility is tied to working at or being enrolled in a qualified educational organization and may need to be re-verified. If the plan expires, some associated services may stop working or enter reduced-functionality mode. Review Microsoft’s Office 365 Education terms.

Microsoft academic eligibility review
Microsoft’s verification process asks for the school’s domain. Many decisions are immediate, while a manual review can take up to 10 business days according to Microsoft’s current guidance. Google One student offers
Google describes student offers that require higher-education status and SheerID verification using a valid school email address. Requirements vary by offer; some also require a personal Google Account and a qualifying payment method. Offers may transition to paid plans when they end, so review the particular terms and renewal details before signing up. Check Google’s student offer requirements.

Azure for Students
Azure for Students is a cloud-services benefit, not a way to obtain a school email address. Microsoft says it is for eligible students who verify academic status through an institutional email and meet additional age and institution requirements. Its program guidance describes a $100 credit for 12 months, subject to eligibility and usage terms; resources may be decommissioned if the student does not renew or upgrade as required. Ask your school how long the mailbox remains active after you leave or graduate. The reviewed university instructions do not establish one retention period for all institutions. Also treat school mailbox access and software eligibility as separate matters: a school controls its account, while a vendor may require you to re-verify student eligibility for a benefit.
