Slow-moving inventory still sells, but more slowly than is normal for its product and selling cycle; dead stock is a more serious case in which sales have stopped or full-price demand is unlikely. There is no universal age cutoff. Before discounting, check what is slowing sales, how long the item can still sell, and what each option is likely to return after fees and handling. Then move from presentation and targeted offers to alternate sales channels or responsible closeout as needed.

How do you know when inventory is slow-moving?

Compare an item’s sales pace and stock age with its usual selling cycle, season, and category—not an arbitrary number of days. Shopify distinguishes slow-moving products from dead stock: slow-moving products continue to sell, while dead stock has stopped selling or is unlikely to sell at full price. Shopify’s guide to slow-moving inventory and Amazon’s seller guidance on dead stock discuss the distinction.

Holding stock ties up cash and storage space, and leaves goods exposed to obsolescence, damage, or expiry. The right response depends on whether the issue is weak demand, poor product presentation, a timing mismatch, excess quantity, or a local imbalance in stock.

Build a useful diagnosis

  • Sales velocity and sell-through: Look at units sold over time and the share of available stock that has sold. Compare like with like, accounting for seasonality.
  • Age, condition, and remaining selling window: Note when units arrived, whether they remain saleable, and whether the product is seasonal, perishable, or becoming outdated.
  • Demand and presentation: Check whether customers are finding the item, whether its listing has clear photos and accurate details, and whether it is displayed where likely buyers will see it.
  • Location and quantity: Compare sales by store or channel. A product that stalls in one location may still have demand elsewhere.
  • Net economics: Estimate proceeds after discounts, channel fees, shipping, handling, and the time required to sell. Compare that with continued carrying costs.

Inventory software can help consolidate stock and sales records; barcode scanning can support accurate receiving. Salesforce’s retail inventory management guidance discusses inventory data, sell-through measures, markdown scheduling, promotions, and scanning.

Which option should you try first?

Start with fixes that preserve the chance of a profitable sale. Improve discovery or presentation, move stock to a location with stronger demand, or make a relevant offer. If these do not work within the product’s remaining selling window, compare other channels by speed, net recovery, effort, volume, and brand fit. No discount level or recovery rate is right for every product.

  1. Measure and segment: Separate slow sellers from dead stock; identify the cause and calculate the cost of holding each item.
  2. Try demand-preserving fixes: Improve the listing or merchandising, target a relevant audience, relocate stock, or pair the item with a suitable product.
  3. Run a controlled offer: Test a targeted markdown or promotion only if expected margin and the selling window justify it. Track units sold and margin, not just revenue.
  4. Change channels if needed: Compare resale marketplaces, auctions, wholesale, B2B, closeout, or liquidation options. Check fees, rules, condition requirements, and brand or contract restrictions before committing.
  5. Close out what remains: Ask suppliers about return or exchange terms; donate usable goods where appropriate; recycle or dispose of items that cannot be sold or safely used.

30 strategies to move slow-moving products

These are options, not a universal ranking. Choose based on product category, quantity, condition, selling window, unit economics, and channel rules. A promotion can increase sales while still reducing profit if the discount and fulfillment costs outweigh the benefit.

Improve the chance of a regular sale

  1. Improve product placement. Put the item where shoppers looking for related products are likely to encounter it, either in-store or online.
  2. Upgrade the listing. Use clear, accurate product descriptions and photos that show condition, features, and important details.
  3. Target the right customers. Promote the item to shoppers whose needs or purchase history make it relevant rather than discounting it to everyone.
  4. Redistribute stock. Transfer units from a slow location to a store or channel where local demand is stronger, if the transfer cost makes sense.
  5. Use seasonal timing. Match promotions to a relevant season or buying occasion; do not hold stock past its viable selling window just to wait for one.

Use price and promotion carefully

  1. Apply a targeted markdown. Reduce the price on the item or segment that needs help instead of lowering prices across the range.
  2. Run a time-limited clearance offer. Set an end date that fits the selling window, then review results rather than letting a temporary offer become a permanent price.
  3. Try a flash sale. A short promotion can create urgency, but only use it where customers can be reached and the economics work.
  4. Offer a buy-one-get-one deal. This can move extra units when the second item’s cost and the offer’s effect on margin are acceptable.
  5. Set a bulk discount. Offer a lower per-unit price for larger quantities when buyers have a reason to purchase more than one.
  6. Create a channel-specific offer. Test an offer on a particular store, marketplace, or customer segment without changing the price everywhere.
  7. Use a daily-deal or local promotion channel. Consider it only if its audience fits the product and its terms and fees leave an acceptable return.

Increase the value of an order

  1. Bundle with a bestseller. Pair the slow seller with a popular product when the combination is useful to the buyer.
  2. Make a complementary bundle. Combine products that naturally work together rather than grouping unrelated stock just to clear it.
  3. Add a gift with purchase. Include a slow-moving item as a bonus with a qualifying order if the perceived value and cost are reasonable.
  4. Offer a discounted upsell. Present the item as an add-on to a relevant purchase, with a price that still makes sense for the business.
  5. Use samples or promotional giveaways. Distribute suitable, safe products to introduce them to potential customers; account for the cost and any applicable rules.

Reach buyers beyond your usual storefront

  1. List on an online resale marketplace. Choose a marketplace where the product category and condition are allowed, and calculate fees, shipping, and fulfillment effort.
  2. Use an auction platform. An auction can suit particular goods or quantities, but the final selling price is uncertain.
  3. Approach wholesale buyers. Offer appropriate volume to buyers who purchase inventory for resale, while checking the effect on brand and existing channel relationships.
  4. Sell directly to other businesses. A B2B offer may fit products that another business can use in its operations or sell to its own customers.
  5. Contact a liquidation company. Compare its terms and expected net proceeds with the cost and time of continuing to sell through other channels.
  6. Try discount or closeout retailers. These outlets may fit products that can still be sold but no longer suit the standard retail price or assortment.
  7. Consider consignment. This can be appropriate for certain goods, such as apparel, where a reseller handles the sale in return for an agreed share.
  8. Use a pop-up shop. A temporary physical sales location can help reach local buyers when the product and expected turnout justify setup costs.
  9. Create an outlet or clearance section. Keep clearance goods easy to find and clearly distinguish them from regular-price merchandise.

Return, repurpose, or retire the stock

  1. Ask the supplier about returns or exchanges. Check the purchase agreement and negotiate only where terms allow; do not assume a return right exists.
  2. Donate usable goods. Donation can put suitable products to use, but tax treatment depends on jurisdiction and business structure. Consult a qualified local tax professional before claiming a tax benefit.
  3. Repurpose items as promotional stock. Use saleable goods for a relevant customer incentive or business promotion when this is more useful than another sales channel.
  4. Recycle through a suitable program. Use an appropriate recovery option for goods that cannot be sold but can be recycled; confirm the program accepts the material or product.
  5. Dispose of unsellable goods responsibly. Damaged, expired, or otherwise unusable products may need disposal in line with applicable safety and local requirements.

How should you compare offers and sales channels?

Do not compare a markdown, marketplace listing, and liquidation offer by headline price alone. Estimate what each path returns after its costs and the time it takes, then weigh that against the risk of keeping the stock.

Factor Question to ask
Speed How quickly will this release cash or storage space?
Net recovery What remains after discounts, fees, shipping, handling, and other selling costs?
Margin and customer economics Does the offer leave acceptable unit economics, and could repeated discounting encourage customers to wait for lower prices?
Effort and volume Can the business prepare, list, pack, and fulfill the quantity involved?
Brand and channel fit Does the outlet suit the product and brand, and comply with existing agreements and channel rules?
Condition and end-of-life Can the item still be sold or donated safely, or does it require recycling or disposal?

Confirm marketplace rules, channel fees, and buyer requirements before transferring stock. Those terms vary by channel and can change. A faster route may be worthwhile when continued storage is costly, but only a product- and channel-specific estimate can establish whether it is.
