For U.S. sellers, Poshmark and Mercari are options for pre-owned fashion; Etsy is suitable only if the item meets Etsy’s standards for what may be sold there.
1. Identify the bag before listing it
Write down what you can verify: brand, style or model if known, color, material, size, condition, and any accessories or original packaging included. If you are unsure of the model or authenticity, do not guess. A precise, supportable description helps buyers judge the actual item.
2. Choose a marketplace that fits the item
Marketplace choice affects who may see the bag, what fees apply, how shipping works, and whether authentication is available. The terms below are U.S.-specific examples; platforms may change their rules, so check the linked pages before listing.

No single platform is best for every bag. Compare the item’s category fit, fee base, shipping process, and any authentication eligibility before choosing.

3. Prepare the bag without hiding its condition
Make the item ready to photograph, but do not imply restoration or authenticity you cannot substantiate. Show the bag as it is and disclose wear, stains, scuffs, damage, or missing pieces in the listing. Mercari and Poshmark both advise sellers to show flaws rather than leave buyers to discover them later.
4. Take clear photos from several angles
Use bright, even light and a plain background. Photograph the front, back, sides, bottom, interior, handles, hardware, labels, and included accessories. Add close-ups of any wear or flaws. Mercari recommends natural lighting and showing defects; Poshmark recommends multiple clear angles and photos of tags and wear.

5. Write an accurate listing
Include the brand when known, category, color, material, condition, useful measurements, and what is included. Describe wear specifically rather than relying on a broad label such as “good condition.” Do not add unrelated brands or tags to attract searches. Keep the description consistent with the photos and avoid unsupported claims about the bag’s model or authenticity.
6. Set a price using comparable sold listings
Search for sold listings of the same or closely comparable bag, taking condition and included items into account. Mercari and Poshmark both recommend using sold-item comparisons. A current asking price is not proof that a bag sells for that amount, and the original retail price alone does not establish its resale value.

Estimate your net proceeds before setting the price: subtract the platform’s applicable fees and account for the shipping arrangement. Fee bases differ—for example, Mercari’s stated 10% fee for the specified U.S. listings includes buyer-paid shipping, while Poshmark’s published U.S. schedule uses a flat fee below its threshold and a percentage at or above it. Do not assume your payout equals the listed item price.
7. Make shipping terms clear and answer questions
Set up the listing’s shipping details carefully and explain who pays shipping through the platform’s available options. Respond to buyer questions promptly and keep the listing current. If a buyer asks about a detail that is not visible, provide an accurate answer rather than guessing.

8. Pack and ship securely
- Use the platform’s label instructions. Poshmark directs sellers to use its prepaid USPS label. On Mercari, choose the correct label category and enter accurate parcel details.
- Weigh and measure the packed shipment when required. Mercari may require dimensions as well as weight, and the seller is responsible for selecting the right package category and dimensional weight.
- Choose packaging suited to the individual bag. A sturdy shipping box can be useful, but select its size and packing materials for the item and the carrier’s rules.
- Keep shipment information. Follow the platform’s tracking workflow and retain the applicable receipt or shipment record.
9. Review the completed transaction
After shipment, monitor tracking through the platform and review the completed transaction’s fees and final payout. Use what you learn about buyer questions, shipping costs, and the difference between asking and sold prices when preparing your next listing. Delivery timing and dispute outcomes depend on the platform’s current policies, so consult its current help information if an issue arises.
