Stock sites provide a place for customers to search and license accepted images; a direct store gives you more control over pricing and products but leaves you responsible for attracting customers. Neither route guarantees sales. Choose based on what buyers might want from your work and how much marketing and fulfillment you want to handle.
Choose how you want to sell
| Route | What the customer buys | What you control or handle |
|---|---|---|
| Stock licensing | A license to use an accepted image under the platform’s terms | You submit work for review and provide accurate descriptions and keywords. The marketplace supplies a catalog and search environment; compensation depends on its plans, license types, and contributor rules. |
| Direct photography storefront | Access to your photography and, depending on your setup, prints or products | You can control pricing, galleries, and customer relationships, but must bring attention to the site. A storefront does not itself create buyers or sales. |
| Prints and products | A physical print or an item featuring your image, such as a mug or magnet | You choose between a print partner and a more hands-on approach. Decide who produces, ships, and supports orders, and how you will reach customers. |
These routes can overlap: a photographer may license some images while offering selected work as prints. The key distinction is whether a customer is looking for permission to use an image in a project or wants a finished physical product.
Compare the practical trade-offs
Customer discovery
Stock marketplaces give customers a catalog in which to search, but competition and platform review affect whether your work is accepted and found. Shutterstock says titles and keywords matter for discoverability and recommends grouping related work into sets and submitting regularly. Those practices can help organize a portfolio; they do not guarantee downloads.
With a direct store, you have greater control over presentation and customer experience, but you need a way to direct people to your site. A clear niche and a specific idea of who might buy your work can help shape the offering, not assure revenue.

Pricing and compensation
Marketplace royalty percentages are not the same as a share of one common sale price. The amount depends on such factors as the platform’s customer plan, license, and contributor status. Direct storefronts may let you set prices and margins, but you also need to account for production, delivery, platform, and marketing costs that apply to your setup.
Rights and control
Read the contributor agreement before uploading. Check whether the relationship is exclusive, what rights you grant, what license a buyer receives, and whether you can continue to use or license the image elsewhere. Adobe Stock describes its contributor relationship as non-exclusive, but that description is not a substitute for reviewing the current agreement.

Do not confuse contributor terms with buyer-license terms. For example, Adobe Stock’s buyer information says standard licenses do not allow resale merchandise when the asset is the product’s primary value, while an extended license permits certain merchandise or products for resale where the asset is the main value. Adobe also says editorial-use-only assets are limited to newsworthy or public-interest uses and cannot be repurposed for commercial uses such as advertising or merchandise without prior written consent and any additional permissions. These are Adobe buyer-use terms, not a complete account of contributor obligations.
Fulfillment and workload
Digital stock licensing avoids printing and shipping physical orders. For prints, a partner may handle production and delivery; a hands-on workflow gives you more direct involvement but means planning for printing, packing, shipping, and customer support. Your choice should reflect the work you want to do as well as the kind of product your customers want.

What platform-published earnings figures mean
The figures below are rules published by the platforms, not typical earnings or predictions. Their percentages use different calculation bases and should not be compared as if they were shares of the same sale price.
| Platform | Published compensation or payment rule | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Adobe Stock | 33% royalty rate for photos, vectors, and illustrations; page last updated July 13, 2026 | The rate is applied to the net price per licensed asset, based on purchase price after discounts. Adobe’s example calculates US$0.99 for a photo under a specified US$29.99-per-month plan with ten licenses. Actual earnings depend on plan pricing and calculation rules. Adobe Stock royalty rates. |
| Shutterstock | Six image earnings levels ranging from 15% to 40%; help page dated April 21, 2025 | Levels are based on contributor download levels and reset to level 1 each January 1. The price share also depends on the plan and license. Shutterstock contributor earnings levels. |
| Shutterstock | At least $25 in accrued licensing earnings to collect payment; help page dated April 18, 2025 | The page says payments are monthly and calculated on the first of each month. It also requires a completed tax form and selected electronic payment provider. Country and provider requirements may affect eligibility, so check the current payment rules. Shutterstock payment and contributor requirements. |
Before relying on a rate or threshold, check the platform’s current terms and whether they apply to your location and account. A royalty rate alone does not tell you how often images will be licensed, what a particular license will pay, or whether a portfolio will earn more than its costs.

Check rights and permissions before uploading
- Confirm ownership. Adobe Stock says contributors must be at least 18 and the sole owner of submitted content. Shutterstock says submitted work must be original and the contributor must own its copyright. Review each platform’s current rules before submitting.
- Get releases where required. Shutterstock says commercial submissions featuring models or private property need a release. Requirements depend on the image and intended use, so check the platform’s submission rules.
- Understand the buyer’s permitted use. A buyer license can limit how an image is used, including use on resale products or use of editorial-only assets. Explain those limits accurately if you sell directly, and do not assume one platform’s buyer terms apply to another.
- Check your agreement. Confirm what rights you grant and whether the arrangement is exclusive or non-exclusive. Adobe describes its contributor partnership as non-exclusive, but the current contributor agreement controls the details.
A practical workflow for getting started
- Sort images into collections. Group coherent work and identify the likely customer or use for each collection. For a direct print business, define a photography niche and who might buy that work.
- Choose the product or license. Submit images to a stock marketplace when the likely customer needs an image license. Build a storefront when you want to present work directly, offer prints or products, or control prices and customer relationships.
- Verify rights and releases. Confirm authorship and ownership, then check whether depicted people or private property require releases under the platform’s commercial-submission rules.
- Prepare useful metadata. Write accurate titles and relevant keywords. Shutterstock recommends grouping portfolio items into sets; metadata helps customers find relevant work but cannot ensure that they will license it.
- Set up print fulfillment if relevant. Decide whether a print partner will produce and deliver orders or whether you will print and ship them yourself. If you self-fulfill, plan for materials, packaging, delivery, and support; outsourced printing does not require you to buy printing supplies.
- Track results and costs. Record approvals, licenses or orders, expenses, and the time spent marketing and fulfilling work. Use your actual results—not a platform’s headline percentage—to judge whether a route is working for you.
Which route fits your work?
- Consider stock licensing if your images suit uses customers search for in a marketplace and you are comfortable with platform review, metadata, and platform-set compensation rules.
- Consider a direct storefront if you want control over presentation, pricing, and customer relationships, and have a plan for bringing potential buyers to your site.
- Consider prints or products if your work can be presented as a physical item and you are prepared to choose a fulfillment arrangement and account for its costs and workload.
You can test more than one route with different collections, provided your agreements and rights allow it. Keep the offers distinct: a stock license serves a project-use need, while a print listing sells a finished product.
