These models avoid some inventory work, but they shift costs and responsibilities rather than eliminating them. If you mainly want someone else to store and ship products you own, fulfillment services such as Amazon FBA or a third-party logistics provider may help—but those are not necessarily inventory-free.
What “selling without inventory” actually means
The phrase can describe two different arrangements: you do not own or hold the product, or you own stock but outsource its storage and shipping. The distinction matters. A fulfillment provider can save warehouse work while leaving you responsible for buying products and replenishing stock.
Before choosing a model, identify what you want to contribute—an audience, product selection, original designs, or useful digital content—and decide who will fulfill orders and handle customer questions. Shopify’s overview of selling without inventory describes several approaches and their trade-offs.
Four ways to sell without owning physical stock
1. Dropshipping
You list products in your online store, but a supplier keeps the goods and ships an order after a customer buys. You are still the customer-facing seller: the supplier’s role in fulfillment does not remove your responsibility to support customers or address returns. This model puts product selection and customer acquisition at the center of your work. Check supplier quality, shipping terms, rates, and reliability before listing products. You have less direct control over packing and delivery than a business shipping its own stock, so supplier problems can become customer problems.
2. Print on demand
You provide a design; a print-on-demand provider makes, packages, and ships an item only after it is ordered. It can suit a store built around original artwork or branded merchandise, without requiring you to buy a bulk run first. Shopify’s print-on-demand guide describes the provider workflow and its trade-offs.
Order samples to assess print and product quality before committing to a design or price. Compare per-item charges, shipping costs, delivery destinations, and turnaround times. Per-unit costs are generally higher than bulk production, and the provider limits how much control you have over fulfillment and shipping.

3. Affiliate sales
You publish recommendations and direct readers to another merchant. If a referral results in a sale, you may earn a commission under that merchant’s program terms. The merchant handles the transaction and product fulfillment, so you do not process or ship the order.
The trade-off is that your business depends on attracting an audience and referral traffic. Verify that a suitable affiliate program is available and review its current terms before building your plan around it; availability and conditions are not established by a general model description.
4. Digital products
You sell files, templates, courses, or other digital access that customers receive electronically. There is no physical stock or postage to manage, though you still need to create or lawfully obtain the content, deliver it, and set expectations for customer support and refunds.

If you want to resell another creator’s work, get permission or a license first. Clarify the permitted uses, royalties, refund terms, and who is responsible for delivery. Shopify discusses this issue in its guide to digital dropshipping. Legal requirements can vary by location, so do not assume one license or policy applies everywhere.

Amazon FBA
With Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA), a seller supplies products to Amazon, which handles fulfillment tasks for orders. The seller may still need to purchase and forecast stock. That makes FBA an option for outsourcing fulfillment—not, by itself, a way to avoid owning inventory.

Third-party logistics (3PL)
A 3PL provider can store and ship goods for a business. This reduces hands-on warehouse work, but the business may still own the stock and face storage charges and replenishment decisions. Consider it when the problem is handling inventory, not owning it.

Choose a model based on the work you want to do
- You have an audience and enjoy making recommendations: affiliate sales may fit, provided you can attract referral traffic and find a suitable program.
- You create original artwork or merchandise concepts: print on demand lets a provider produce items after orders arrive; test samples and costs first.
- You are prepared to select products and acquire customers: dropshipping avoids holding the supplier’s stock, but you remain responsible for the customer relationship.
- You can create useful content or secure resale rights: digital products avoid physical fulfillment, but rights and delivery responsibilities need to be clear.
- You already plan to own products and mainly want less warehouse work: compare FBA or 3PL as fulfillment arrangements, not as inventory-free models.
What to check before opening the store
- Define your offer and responsibility. Decide whether you are selling your own design or content, referring customers elsewhere, or choosing products supplied by another business. Be clear about who takes payment, fulfills orders, answers customer questions, and handles returns.
- Check the economics per order. Account for product or provider charges, shipping, platform and payment costs, marketing, and customer-service time. Avoid assuming that not buying stock means starting or operating at no cost.
- Test what you can before launch. For print on demand, order samples. For dropshipping, confirm supplier quality and shipping terms. For digital resale, secure written permission or an appropriate license.
- Set customer expectations. Make delivery timing, product details, support arrangements, and relevant refund terms clear. The less direct control you have over fulfillment, the more important it is to understand and communicate the provider’s process.
- Choose an ecommerce platform only after deciding how you will sell. Check current platform features and integration support for your chosen model; availability and terms can change.
Can you sell on Amazon without inventory?
The answer depends on what you mean by “without inventory.” FBA outsources fulfillment after you supply stock, so it does not necessarily eliminate inventory ownership. A business model that relies on a supplier or digital delivery is a different arrangement; verify the marketplace’s current rules and requirements before listing products.
Do you have to have inventory to sell on Etsy?
Inventory requirements depend on the product and the marketplace’s current policies. This guide does not establish Etsy’s rules for particular listings or fulfillment arrangements, so check Etsy’s current seller policies before choosing a model for the platform.
How do you sell T-shirts without inventory?
Print on demand is one option: submit your design to a provider, which produces and ships a shirt after a customer orders. Order samples and calculate the item and delivery costs before setting a price. You avoid holding a bulk stock of shirts, but you still need to market the design and handle the customer relationship.
