The safest practical approach is to keep only a limited spending balance in an internet-connected wallet and protect long-term savings with an offline setup and carefully secured recovery backups. First decide whether you want to control the keys yourself or rely on a service: self-custody gives you direct control, but also makes you responsible for protecting access and recovery.
Choose who controls the keys
A Bitcoin wallet manages the keys used to authorize transactions. With self-custody, you control those keys and are responsible for keeping them secure and recoverable. With an exchange or other custodian, the provider controls the keys or handles access on your behalf; you depend on its security, solvency, and withdrawal policies. Bitcoin.org outlines the distinction in its introductory guidance.
Neither arrangement removes risk. Self-custody avoids dependence on a provider but creates the possibility of losing access through a missing or exposed backup, a compromised device, or a mistake. Custody can reduce the day-to-day burden of managing keys, but it does not give you the same direct control over withdrawals.
Separate spending money from savings
Bitcoin.org recommends keeping only small amounts on a computer or mobile device for everyday use and storing the rest in a safer environment. A connected wallet is convenient for frequent transactions, but its device and software are exposed to online threats. An offline arrangement, including a hardware wallet, can reduce that exposure for savings; it does not protect funds if the device is misused or its recovery information is stolen.
#1 Best Overall
- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Choose a setup you can reliably operate. Bitcoin.org’s wallet chooser lets users compare factors such as transparency, control, and validation. Treat those as separate criteria, not as a guarantee that a wallet is secure overall.
Secure the wallet and its recovery path
Back up what your wallet actually requires
Follow the selected wallet’s backup instructions. Some wallets require periodic backups; many modern deterministic wallets can be restored with a recovery phrase, but do not assume every wallet works the same way. Test your understanding of the recovery process before relying on a device as your only access point. Bitcoin.org’s wallet security guidance explains why backups matter.

A recovery phrase is effectively a way to access the associated bitcoin: anyone who obtains it may be able to take control. Write it down and keep it private, offline, and protected from both theft and physical loss. Avoid networked photos, email, notes apps, or cloud storage for the phrase. Where practical, keep protected backups in more than one physical place so a single fire, flood, or theft does not destroy every copy.
Protect devices, passwords, and software
- Encrypt the wallet or device when the software supports it, and use a strong, unpredictable password.
- Make a realistic plan for remembering or recovering that password without storing it beside the wallet or exposing the recovery phrase.
- Keep wallet software and the phone or computer it runs on updated.
- For larger or shared holdings, consider multisignature, which requires multiple independent approvals for a transaction. It can reduce reliance on one key, but setup and recovery are more complex and must be planned accordingly.
Plan for loss and succession
Consider what happens if a device is lost, damaged, or stolen, and whether your backups remain accessible without making them easy for someone else to find. If you want a trusted successor or heir to recover funds, arrange for them to locate the necessary information when appropriate without exposing it prematurely. A recovery plan is part of the storage design, not an afterthought.

Use an offline wallet carefully
A hardware wallet is a device designed to keep signing keys away from an internet-connected computer or phone. It can lower some online exposure, but the security of the arrangement still depends on setup, backup protection, and careful transaction approval. Bitcoin.org’s hardware wallet directory describes this category; no particular model is evaluated here.
- Buy from the manufacturer or an authorized reseller rather than relying on an unfamiliar third-party marketplace listing.
- Inspect the packaging and follow the maker’s setup instructions.
- Generate the recovery seed yourself during first-time setup. Do not use a device that arrives with a prewritten recovery phrase or asks you to enter one supplied by someone else.
- Keep the recovery phrase separate from the device and secure it using the backup practices above.
- When sending bitcoin, verify the complete destination address on the device or trusted display before approving the transaction.
Recognize scams before they reach your wallet
Bitcoin transactions are irreversible, so a mistaken or scam-directed payment may not be recoverable. Bitcoin.org warns about address poisoning, counterfeit hardware wallets, fake support or recovery offers, and giveaway scams in its scam guidance.

- Be skeptical of guaranteed recovery. A stranger claiming they can retrieve stolen or inaccessible bitcoin may be attempting a second theft.
- Reject pre-generated seeds. A counterfeit or tampered device may use a phrase already known to an attacker or modified firmware. Source the device carefully and create its seed yourself.
