How to Save Money With Fintech Tools: A Practical U.S. Guide

Fintech tools can make budgeting and saving more consistent, but fees, access, data permissions, and the institution holding your money matter. Here’s how to compare them safely.

Fintech tools can make it easier to see where your money goes and move some of it into savings, but no app can guarantee you will save. Start with a clear goal, choose a tool whose fees and access rules fit your needs, and verify which bank or institution actually holds any deposits. The provider examples and terms associated with a 2024 guide are historical; check current terms before signing up.

What fintech tools can—and cannot—do for saving

“Fintech” covers several different services, not one kind of savings account. A budgeting app may organize transactions, an automated-savings feature may move money according to rules you set, an investing app may help manage investments, and a third-party app may provide access to an account held at a partner bank. These tools can support a saving habit, but their features, protections, and risks differ.

Some apps combine budgeting, saving, payments, and investing. Check what a specific feature actually does rather than assuming that money displayed in an app is earning interest or receiving the same protections as a bank deposit. The SEC’s overview explains the distinction between saving and investing apps and their functions: Investor.gov: Saving and Investing Apps.

Budgeting and cash-flow visibility

A budgeting or money-management app can bring transactions from multiple accounts into one view, categorize spending, and help you identify an amount you can regularly set aside. Before connecting accounts, check the app’s data permissions, connection method, cancellation process, and which features remain available without a paid subscription. A detailed budget is only useful if its categories and account data are accurate enough for you to act on.

Automated savings rules

Automation can reduce the effort of making repeated transfers, but the rule matters. A rule that transfers a fixed amount on payday is different from one that saves only when a condition is met, such as a purchase or a balance threshold. Set an amount and timing that leave enough in the source account for bills and everyday spending; otherwise, transfers can create shortfalls or overdrafts.

A CFPB analysis of Qapital app data found that 81 percent of savings goals used a spending-contingent rule and 41 percent used a guaranteed rule. These categories can overlap. In that dataset, guaranteed rules were associated with roughly 1.5 to 3.5 times larger increases in the maximum amount saved within a year and in the likelihood of reaching specified milestones than either category of contingent rules. This is an association in the examined data, not proof that a rule caused the result or a forecast for a new user. Read the CFPB study.

Investing apps

Investing is not a substitute for emergency savings. Investment values can fall, and money may not be available at the moment you need it. If your goal is near-term or your priority is dependable access to cash, understand whether a feature is actually a deposit account or an investment product before moving money into it.

Payment apps

Payment apps are designed to send or receive money, not necessarily to build savings. Keep only the transaction balance you need, and check whether it earns interest, how quickly you can withdraw it, and what protections apply. The CFPB estimated about $90 million annually in cash-back fees based on a sample of three large national retailers in an August 2024 analysis. That figure concerns retail cash access; it is not an estimate of fintech fees generally or of what a particular user will pay. See the CFPB’s cash-back fee analysis.

How to compare apps and accounts before signing up

Do not choose a service from a “best app” ranking alone. Promotional terms and product features change, and a ranking may reflect commercial relationships. Compare the practical details that affect your money and your ability to use it:

  • Total cost: Look for subscription charges, account fees, transfer fees, minimum balances, and charges for optional features.
  • Eligibility: Confirm where the service is available and whether you meet its age, residency, account, or other requirements.
  • Access: Check deposit and withdrawal timing, transfer limits, withdrawal restrictions, and what happens if the app or a transfer network is unavailable.
  • Institution and protections: Identify the bank or other institution holding deposits and confirm the account’s eligibility for deposit insurance. An app’s display of a balance does not establish that the balance is insured.
  • Data and connections: Read what account information the app accesses, how you connect accounts, and how to revoke access. Use secure connection methods offered by the service rather than sharing login credentials when an alternative is available.
  • Transfer controls: Check whether you can set limits, pause or cancel automated transfers, and prevent transfers from pushing your source account below a safe balance.
  • Commercial incentives: Look for disclosures about referral compensation, sponsored placement, or other incentives that could affect a comparison.

The CFPB has warned that steering by digital comparison-shopping tools can raise legal concerns in circumstances where consumers reasonably rely on a tool to act in their interests. When using a comparison site, distinguish clearly explained criteria from paid placement. Read CFPB Circular 2024-01.

Is money in a fintech app safe?

Safety depends on what the app does and which institution holds the money. A fintech company may provide the interface while a partner bank holds deposits. The FDIC advises consumers to identify the specific insured bank behind a product described as FDIC-insured and verify that institution. Do not infer that every balance shown in an app is a bank deposit or is covered by deposit insurance.

A third-party app can also have an outage that prevents or delays access, even when a partner institution holds the underlying deposit. For emergency savings, a direct account at an insured bank or credit union may be easier to understand than an arrangement involving multiple providers. See the FDIC’s guide to banking with third-party apps.

Account connections raise a separate privacy question. In October 2024, the CFPB described a personal financial data rights rule intended to support consumer access to and sharing of financial data and a shift away from risky credential-sharing or screen-scraping practices. Implementation and legal status can change, and the announcement does not mean every app connection is currently governed in the same way. Review the permissions requested by each app and choose available secure connection methods. See the CFPB’s October 2024 announcement.

In November 2024, the CFPB announced a payment-app supervision rule covering large providers handling more than 50 million transactions per year. The announcement quoted CFPB Director Rohit Chopra: “Digital payments have gone from novelty to necessity and our oversight must reflect this reality.” That is a dated announcement, not a guarantee of the rule’s current legal status or effective scope; check current official information before relying on it. Read the CFPB announcement.

A practical way to start saving with fintech

  1. Choose the goal. Decide what the money is for and when you may need it. That helps determine whether you need a readily accessible deposit account or are considering a longer-term investment.
  2. Find a sustainable amount. Use a budget or cash-flow view to identify an amount you can set aside after essential expenses. If you are unsure, begin with a small amount and adjust based on actual account activity.
  3. Compare the full terms. Review fees, minimums, transfer timing, withdrawal limits, eligibility, data permissions, and any promotional terms that may expire.
  4. Verify where deposits are held. If a service claims deposit insurance, identify the specific partner bank and confirm that the account and ownership arrangement qualify. The FDIC’s Starting Small Can Lead to Big Savings resource also offers general saving guidance.
  5. Set an automation you can manage. Choose a predictable schedule or rule, set a conservative limit, and make sure you can pause or cancel transfers. Monitor the source account so an automated move does not interfere with bills.
  6. Review after the first transfers. Check that transfers arrive when expected, fees match what you understood, and the app’s account data is accurate. Change the amount or stop the rule if it creates cash-flow problems.
