For an India-resident individual, the usual starting point is a bank or other provider authorized to handle the India-origin transfer. Before sending money to a US bank account, confirm that your purpose is permitted, ask the provider for its current document checklist, and compare the dollars the recipient will actually receive after exchange rates and charges.
How do I send money from India to the USA?
For a resident individual, outward remittances are generally handled through an RBI-authorized dealer and may fall under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS), depending on the sender’s circumstances and the transfer’s purpose. A bank can explain whether the proposed transfer fits the applicable rules and what it needs before accepting the instruction.
- Confirm your situation and purpose. Tell the provider whether you are resident in India and state the actual reason for the transfer—for example, education, medical treatment, a gift, or support for a close relative abroad. Do not select a different purpose just because it seems easier to process.
- Check the route and eligibility. Ask the bank or provider whether it can send an India-origin payment to the recipient’s US bank account for that purpose. Do not assume that a service available for transfers into India can also send money out of India.
- Get the provider’s current instructions. Confirm its form, required declarations and supporting documents for your specific purpose, amount, residency and beneficiary route. HSBC India’s published wire instructions, for example, call for a wire-transfer form with beneficiary details, amount and purpose, and say outward wires are subject to tax compliance and required documents. That is an illustration of one bank’s process, not a universal checklist.
- Compare a live quote. For the same INR amount and destination, check the USD amount expected to arrive, the exchange rate, transfer charges and any possible intermediary or recipient-bank deductions. Also ask about estimated delivery, how a delay or return is handled, and any tax collected at transfer time.
- Submit and keep the records. Provide the information and documents requested by the chosen provider, review the final amount and purpose before authorizing the transfer, and retain the confirmation and tax-related records it supplies.
Does the Liberalised Remittance Scheme apply?
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) describes LRS as covering permitted current- and capital-account transactions by resident individuals, up to USD 250,000 per financial year (April–March), subject to the scheme’s conditions and exceptions. The limit is not a blanket permission to send any amount for any reason: the bank checks the transaction and the rules relevant to its purpose.
RBI material identifies purposes such as gifts or donations, maintenance of close relatives abroad, education and medical treatment, with purpose-specific conditions. Ask the provider whether this transfer counts toward your LRS use for the financial year and what evidence it requires. Older forms or checklists should not be treated as a current, universal document list.

What documents and beneficiary details might the bank ask for?
There is no single document list established for every sender, purpose and provider. A bank’s wire process may request beneficiary details, the amount and the purpose, plus declarations or supporting records needed for its compliance review. Requirements can vary with the purpose, amount, sender’s circumstances and the selected transfer route.

How much does it cost to transfer money from India to the USA?
Compare the recipient’s expected USD after all costs, not just the advertised transfer fee. A less favorable INR/USD rate can outweigh a low stated fee, while a wire may also involve deductions by an intermediary or the receiving bank. Ask the sending and receiving banks which charges could apply and whether the selected wire option sends the full instructed amount.
- Exchange rate: Record the INR/USD rate offered and the resulting USD delivery amount for the same INR send amount.
- Provider charges: Include transfer, commission and conversion-related charges shown in the quote.
- Downstream deductions: Ask whether correspondent, intermediary or recipient-bank fees could reduce the amount credited.
- Timing and support: Compare the estimated arrival time and the provider’s process for tracing a delayed transfer or resolving a returned payment.
- Tax cash flow: Ask whether tax collection at source (TCS) applies, how it is calculated for your situation, and what records you will receive.
Rates and charges can change, so capture a quote immediately before deciding. Without current quotes for the same amount, purpose and payout route, a “cheapest” provider ranking would not be meaningful.

Will tax be collected at source?
TCS is not simply another transfer fee, and the amount collected at transfer time is not necessarily the sender’s final tax burden. Its treatment depends on the applicable law, purpose classification, the sender’s circumstances and cumulative remittances in the financial year. Bank information reviewed for this guide describes a ₹10 lakh annual threshold, but the bank should confirm the current calculation for your transfer.
HSBC India displays a purpose-specific schedule marked effective April 1, 2026: nil TCS on education-loan remittances covered by its stated rule; nil up to ₹10 lakh and 2% above that threshold for education or medical treatment and associated travel; and nil up to ₹10 lakh then 20% above for other LRS purposes. HSBC says the threshold is combined across purposes for the financial year. AU Small Finance Bank’s April 2026 information sheet also displays a ₹10 lakh threshold, 2% for qualifying education or medical remittances above it, and 20% for other LRS purposes, with a loan-funded education exception. These are bank-published descriptions, not a substitute for confirming the treatment that applies to your transaction.

No. RBI’s Money Transfer Service Scheme (MTSS) is for inward personal remittances into India; RBI states that outward remittances from India are not permitted through MTSS. For money going from India to a US account, ask about a valid outward-remittance route instead.
