Moving company reviews can help you spot recurring service problems, but a star rating cannot verify a company’s registration, insurance, estimate, or legal responsibility for your shipment. Use reviews as an early screening step, then verify the provider, compare written estimates, and understand the paperwork before you book.
What moving company reviews can—and cannot—tell you
Reviews are most useful when they describe specific events: a missed pickup, an unexpected charge, poor communication, damaged belongings, or a prompt resolution. Look for the same concrete issue across multiple reviews, rather than treating one unusually positive or negative account as decisive. Read recent reviews alongside older ones to see whether reported service patterns appear to have changed.
A review score is not proof of registration, insurance, a fair price, or who is legally responsible for moving your goods. The sources cited here do not establish how reliable particular review platforms are or how often reviews are manipulated, so use reviews as leads to investigate—not as a substitute for official checks.
Check the business and its complaint history
Search the company’s name online with terms such as “complaint” or “scam.” The Federal Trade Commission’s September 2024 consumer advice recommends reading reviews and making this kind of search: FTC: How to Avoid Moving Scams.

For an interstate household move, check the company through the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). Its mover search can help you check registration information and complaints; FMCSA’s consumer guidance also recommends verifying authorization and insurance. Its selection checklist, last updated November 4, 2024, advises comparing estimates from at least three movers or brokers: FMCSA: Steps to Select a Mover.
Rules depend on the move. FMCSA guidance applies to interstate household-goods moves. Intrastate requirements vary, so check with the consumer-protection or transportation authority in your state. For an international move, consult the Federal Maritime Commission’s guidance on moving overseas for information about checking licensing, bonding, and unresolved complaints.

Find out who will actually move your belongings
A mover transports household goods. A broker arranges transportation but does not itself move the goods. Ask each provider plainly whether it is the mover or a broker, and who will perform the job. If a broker is involved, get the actual mover’s identity and verify that company too. FMCSA explains the distinction in its moving broker guidance.
Compare written estimates on equal terms
Get written estimates from several providers. The FMCSA checklist recommends at least three estimates from movers or brokers. Compare more than the total: an inexpensive quote may describe a different shipment or exclude services another provider has included.

| What to compare | What to check |
|---|---|
| Shipment and survey | Does the estimate describe the belongings being moved, and is it based on a survey or inventory? Ask how the provider assessed the shipment. |
| Estimate type and price | Is the estimate binding or nonbinding? What charges may change, and when is payment due? |
| Included services | Check whether packing, stairs, long carries, storage, and other services you need are included or priced separately. |
| Schedule and communication | Confirm pickup and delivery arrangements, the contact responsible for updates, and how delays will be communicated. |
| Damage responsibility | Review the liability option and how to report damaged or missing items. |
For interstate moves, FMCSA explains that under a nonbinding estimate, the mover generally cannot require more than 110 percent of that estimate at delivery; the remaining balance is handled under the applicable rules. This is not a general cap on every final moving charge. Read the agency’s consumer-rights guidance and the estimate itself.
Understand coverage and keep the move paperwork
FMCSA says interstate movers must offer Full Value Protection, and consumers should review the coverage they select. Released-value protection is different: FMCSA describes it as 60 cents per pound for interstate household goods, not full replacement coverage. Check the options, exclusions, and valuation terms in the mover’s documents before choosing; FMCSA explains them in its consumer-rights guidance.

- The company gives only a sight-unseen estimate without a clear, documented basis.
- It asks you to sign blank or incomplete paperwork.
- It demands a large upfront cash deposit.
- It will not provide basic business or registration details, or will not say who will transport your shipment.
- The written terms do not clearly identify the estimate type, included services, or damage responsibilities.
These are reasons to stop and get answers or another estimate before committing. FTC consumer advice and FMCSA’s selection checklist explain scam precautions and verification steps.

A practical order for choosing a mover
- Screen reviews: Look for repeated, specific accounts of service, communication, charges, and problem resolution.
- Search and verify: Search the company name with “complaint” or “scam.” For an interstate move, use FMCSA’s mover search; for intrastate moves, check your state authority. For international moves, consult FMC guidance.
- Identify the provider: Ask whether you are speaking with a mover or broker, and verify the company that will actually transport your goods.
- Compare estimates: Get written estimates from several providers and compare shipment details, estimate type, services, timing, and liability terms.
- Review and retain documents: Read the estimate, bill of lading, and inventory before signing; keep copies and document any loss or damage.
As FMCSA puts it, “The best defense against moving fraud is to be informed and aware of your options when choosing a moving company.”
