For a safer, easier grocery shop, use a clean basket sized for a small load, keep raw animal foods and cleaning products apart from other groceries, and add chilled or frozen items near the end. A hand basket carries groceries; it does not keep them cold.
Choose a clean basket that fits the shop
Before you start, check that the basket looks clean. If it is visibly dirty, choose another and tell store staff so it can be cleaned. The NSW Food Authority says shopping equipment may carry microorganisms even when it appears clean, but assesses the risk of it transmitting foodborne disease as low. NSW Food Authority guidance
Use a hand basket for a brief shop and a manageable load. Stop adding items if it becomes awkward or uncomfortable to carry; switch to a trolley or another carrying option for a larger shop. There is no universal safe carrying-weight limit established for shoppers or basket models in the sources cited here, so judge the load by comfort rather than a fixed number.
Arrange groceries to keep them separate
Separate raw foods from ready-to-eat items
Keep raw meat, poultry, and seafood away from produce and foods that are ready to eat. Put raw items in a separate bag or container where possible, and take care that juices cannot leak onto other groceries. Keep loose produce in a clean bag, then wash it under running water before eating. Health Canada and the Queensland Government provide guidance on separating foods and handling produce.

Keep household chemicals apart from food
Place household cleaning products separately from groceries, and avoid buying food with damaged packaging. If you use reusable bags or bins, keep separate ones for produce and raw animal products. Wash them after spills or after carrying non-food items, and let them dry after washing. NSW Food Authority shopping advice and Health Canada’s reusable-bag guidance support these precautions.

If errands will keep you out longer than 30 minutes, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics’ U.S. consumer guidance recommends bringing an insulated cooler with chill packs for perishable foods.
