Affiliate marketing can earn you commissions when someone makes a qualifying purchase or takes another action defined by a program after following your recommendation. Signing up or adding a link does not guarantee clicks, sales, or income. To get started, choose an audience, publish useful content on a channel that suits them, select relevant offers, follow each program’s rules, disclose your relationship, and improve based on actual results.

The steps below are a practical sequence, not a guaranteed formula. Earnings, program availability, disclosure laws, and promotion rules vary by location and program; the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) guidance and Amazon examples cited here are U.S.-oriented.

How do I start affiliate marketing?

Affiliate marketing is a commission arrangement: you publish content that recommends or discusses an offer, provide a tracked link, and may earn money if a reader completes an action covered by the program’s terms. That action might be a qualifying purchase or another specified conversion. The program defines what counts, how tracking works, and when a commission is payable.

Use these eight steps to build a reader-focused approach. None guarantees approval, traffic, sales, a particular income, or a timeline to your first commission.

  1. Choose a focused audience or niche. Define whom you want to help and what kinds of questions they need answered. A narrower focus can make it easier to create relevant content, but no niche is guaranteed to be profitable.
  2. Choose a publishing channel and format. Decide whether your audience is best served by a website, social platform, video, or a mix. The right choice depends on audience habits, the formats you can sustain, and the rules of each program—not on a universal ranking of channels. Shopify’s affiliate-marketing guide includes channel and format among the early planning choices.
  3. Identify a real audience need. Start with a question, problem, or decision your readers have. A useful guide, comparison, or explanation should make sense even if it contains no affiliate link.
  4. Find programs and read their current terms. Check eligibility, geographic availability, accepted publishing channels, prohibited promotion methods, tracking and payment conditions, and any other requirements. Rules differ by program and can change.
  5. Select an offer that fits the reader’s need. Recommend an offer because it is relevant, not simply because it pays a commission. Explain meaningful limitations and alternatives so readers can make an informed decision.
  6. Publish original, useful content. Make the purpose clear, provide enough detail to answer the question, and be accurate about what you know. Google’s guidance asks creators to consider whether content is original, complete, authored responsibly, and made to help people; it does not promise search rankings or affiliate income. See Google’s guidance on helpful, reliable, people-first content.
  7. Disclose the relationship clearly. Tell readers plainly when you may earn a commission, placing the disclosure where they encounter the recommendation. For an endorsement in a video, include the disclosure in the video itself rather than relying only on its description.
  8. Review results and improve. Use the program’s reporting and reader feedback to see what is being clicked or converting under that program’s definitions. Update content and offers where it helps readers; do not assume a standard conversion rate or a particular time to earnings.

Can beginners make money with affiliate marketing?

They can earn commissions if a program records a qualifying action and the program’s terms are met. But beginner status, publishing a certain number of posts, or joining a program does not establish that a person will earn money. The sources cited here provide no credible general earnings figure or benchmark for time to first commission, so treat income estimates and success-rate claims with caution unless they are supported by relevant, verifiable evidence.

For example, Amazon says its Associates program helps creators, publishers, and bloggers monetize traffic through recommendations and qualifying purchases or other program actions. Its overview advertises commissions of up to 10%. That is Amazon’s stated maximum, not a typical rate, a guaranteed commission, or an earnings forecast. Rates depend on current program terms and may vary by locale. Check the Amazon Associates program overview and the applicable Amazon Associates Program Policies before relying on any rate or rule; the policies page reports an update date of April 14, 2026.

Do I need a website to start?

Not necessarily. A website, social channel, or video format may each suit a different audience and type of content. Before building around a channel, check whether the programs you are considering permit promotion there and whether you can follow their link and disclosure rules. A website can offer room for detailed, organized articles; social posts or videos may suit audiences who prefer those formats. Those are practical trade-offs, not evidence that one channel costs less or earns more.

If you use a website, Google’s Search Essentials recommends helpful, people-first content, words readers search for in prominent places, crawlable links, and sharing a site with relevant communities. Following its guidance does not guarantee that Google will crawl, index, or show a page. Review Google Search Essentials for the current guidance.

How do I choose an affiliate program and offer?

First check whether the program fits your location, audience, and publishing channel. Then read its current terms rather than relying on a general article or an old commission-rate summary. Useful questions include:

  • Can you join from your country, and can your intended audience access the offer?
  • Which websites, social platforms, or other traffic sources are accepted?
  • Are there restrictions on paid advertising, email, coupons, brand names, or other promotional methods?
  • What action qualifies for commission, how is it tracked, and what are the payment conditions?
  • What disclosures or program identification statements must you include?
  • Does the offer genuinely address the reader’s question, and can you explain its limitations and alternatives fairly?

Amazon Associates is one example, not the only route into affiliate marketing. Amazon’s program pages describe its own requirements and terms; they do not establish eligibility or rules for other programs. Confirm current details directly with each program before publishing links.

How do I disclose affiliate links?

Make the relationship easy to understand and hard to miss. The FTC says an endorsement’s financial or other material relationship should be disclosed clearly and conspicuously, close to the endorsement. Its FAQ gives “I get commissions for purchases made through links in this post” as an example. It says “paid link” next to a link can communicate its nature, while “affiliate link” alone may not tell readers that the publisher gets paid. See the FTC’s Endorsement Guides FAQ and FTC guidance for social media influencers.

Do not rely on an about page, a disclosure buried at the end, or a label readers must expand to find. If you endorse a product in a video, the FTC says to disclose the relationship in the video as well as considering any description disclosure.

Amazon Associates has additional program requirements. Its help page gives “(paid link),” “#ad,” and “#CommissionsEarned” as examples of link-level disclosure and requires this site identification statement: “As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.” Follow Amazon’s current associate identification and link-disclosure guidance if you participate. That Amazon statement is a program requirement; it should not be treated as the only disclosure needed for every legal context.

How do I improve without making misleading claims?

Use actual program reporting to understand which links receive clicks and which actions the program recognizes. Pair those figures with reader questions and feedback: a page may need clearer explanations, better-matched offers, or an update if terms have changed. Keep claims about a product grounded in what you can verify. Do not imply you personally tested or used something if you did not, and do not promise readers they will earn a particular amount.

Google’s search guidance is about creating useful content and search eligibility, not assured visibility. Its Search Essentials explicitly notes that following best practices does not guarantee crawling, indexing, or serving. Treat search traffic as uncertain, and choose content improvements for their value to readers rather than as a promise of commissions.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
