If you bought directly from Apple in the United States, you generally have 14 calendar days from the date you receive the item to return it. Start an online return from Apple’s Order Listing, or take an eligible item to a U.S. Apple Store. If you bought it from another retailer, that retailer’s return policy applies.
Check whether Apple’s U.S. return policy applies
This guide covers purchases made directly from Apple in the United States. Apple says the return period is 14 calendar days from the date you receive the item. Its U.S. policy limits returns to the country of purchase, and Apple has separate policies for other countries; check the local policy if you bought outside the U.S. (Apple U.S. return policy; Apple U.S. retail sales policy; Apple country and region selector.)
Items bought from a third-party retailer must be returned to that retailer under its policy, not Apple’s. Before starting, gather the product and the cords, adapters, and documentation that came with it. Apple’s policy page does not show a publication date, so confirm its current terms before relying on them.
How to return an Apple.com order by mail
- Sign in to Apple’s Order Listing with the Apple Account used to place the order.
- Open the order details, choose the item, then select Start a Return and Get Started.
- Confirm which items you are returning and select Initiate Your Return.
- Follow the prompts and print the return label and any required hazardous-material labels. If the return uses multiple boxes, print a separate label for each box.
- Arrange carrier pickup or take the package to a carrier location. Apple recommends using the original packaging when returning a computer.

How to return an item at an Apple Store
Apple says eligible U.S. purchases can be returned to any U.S. Apple Store. A specialist can help with the return, and Apple processes the refund at that time. Bring the product and its included cords, adapters, and documentation. If the order was shipped directly to a business, Apple directs customers to contact their Business Team. Can you exchange an Apple product?
You can take a U.S. Apple purchase to a U.S. Apple Store to request an exchange, but the replacement must be available in store. Apple recommends checking pickup availability for the item you want before making the trip.

Apple says personalized products, such as engraved iPads or AirPods, and custom-configured Macs cannot be exchanged in store. They may be returned for a refund under the standard return policy. If an online order arrived damaged or incorrect, Apple says you can return it at a U.S. Apple Store or through Apple Customer Service. Details are on Apple’s returns page.
How long does an Apple refund take?
Apple says it initiates a refund after receiving the returned item. For a canceled item that was billed for pickup, Apple says it initiates the refund after the cancellation request. For a credit or debit card purchase, Apple sends the refund to the card-issuing bank within five business days of receiving the return or cancellation. The bank controls when the credit appears on your account.

Refunds follow the payment method used:
- Credit or debit card: Apple sends the refund to the issuing bank within five business days of receipt or cancellation; the bank determines when it posts.
- Apple Gift Card: Apple refunds the purchase as an Apple Gift Card sent by email.
- Apple Account Balance: Apple returns amounts paid from the balance to that balance, subject to the balance-limit exception described in its refund guidance.
Returning an Apple gift
Apple has a separate online process for returning a gift. You need the product’s serial number or the order number; if you use the order number, Apple also asks for the UPC from the product packaging. After Apple receives the item, it sends the gift refund by email as an electronic Apple Gift Card. Apple Gift Cards themselves are not eligible for return. - Purchase channel and country: Confirm you bought directly from Apple and are returning within the country of purchase. For another retailer or country, follow the applicable policy.
- Timing and eligibility: Check the 14-calendar-day period from receipt and Apple’s eligibility terms.
- Replacement availability: An in-store exchange depends on whether the desired replacement is available; check pickup availability first.
- Product type: Personalized products and custom-configured Macs cannot be exchanged in store, though Apple says they can be returned for a refund under the standard policy.
- Payment method: Consider where the refund will go and, for card payments, allow for the bank’s posting time after Apple sends it.
