To pay a Global Tel Link (GTL) account, first identify the correctional facility and the account type, then use a payment method offered for that facility. GTL’s ConnectNetwork services can include AdvancePay phone accounts, inmate trust accounts, and inmate PIN Debit accounts, but availability and payment options vary by facility.
First, identify the account you need to fund
GTL’s ConnectNetwork account setup information describes three account types that may accept funds:
- AdvancePay: a prepaid telephone account.
- Inmate trust: a deposit account associated with the person’s facility.
- PIN Debit: an account used for phone services through a personal identification number.
Electronic messaging is also available through ConnectNetwork at some facilities, but it is a related service, not one of these payment accounts. Choose the account based on what you intend to pay for; money sent to one account type should not be assumed to cover another.
Check whether ConnectNetwork serves the facility
GTL says service availability depends on the facility. Use the Locations link on the ConnectNetwork service page to check whether the facility offers the relevant service. A facility may not offer every account type or payment channel, and kiosk availability also varies.

Choose a payment method the facility supports
GTL lists these payment routes on its Transaction Accounts page. Confirm the facility’s current instructions before paying, because the list does not mean every route is available at every institution.
| Payment route | What to know |
|---|---|
| Online through ConnectNetwork | GTL says its online tools are available around the clock and accept Visa and Mastercard credit or debit cards. Account and facility availability still apply. |
| Automated telephone system | GTL says its automated telephone tools are available around the clock and accept Visa and Mastercard credit or debit cards. |
| Operator-assisted telephone payment | Listed by GTL; check facility instructions for availability and transaction details. |
| Certified check or money order by mail | Listed by GTL; use the facility-specific instructions for the correct payee and mailing details. |
| Western Union | Listed by GTL; confirm the facility’s current requirements before sending funds. |
| Facility lobby kiosk | Available only where the facility provides one. |
| Intake kiosk | Available only where provided. GTL says booked inmates can use intake kiosks to fund their own accounts. |
Make the payment and verify its destination
- Open the official ConnectNetwork flow or follow the facility’s payment instructions. Select the correct facility and the specific service or account you need to fund.
- Check the recipient and payment details. For a mailed check or money order, follow the facility’s instructions for the payee and address. For an online or telephone payment, verify that the selected account belongs to the intended person and is the right account type.
- Review the amount and any fees before confirming. GTL’s terms say charges can vary by facility and fees may change. The amount and fees displayed for your transaction are more useful than assuming a nationwide rate.
- Keep the confirmation or payment record. If you need help tracing a payment, use the transaction details and the contact route provided by ConnectNetwork or the facility.
Why account type matters for trust and debit deposits
Do not assume that every deposit goes to the same recipient or is handled through the same process. A Rhode Island tariff effective April 1, 2023, says prepaid debit deposits are handled by the entity managing that account, which may be the facility or commissary. That is state-specific information, not a universal rule; follow the instructions for the particular facility and account.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to confirm before you pay
- The facility offers ConnectNetwork and the account type you need.
- The payment method you plan to use is currently accepted there.
- The account destination is correct: AdvancePay, trust, or PIN Debit.
- The transaction screen or facility instructions show the amount, any fees, and any timing information that applies.
GTL’s terms identify Global Tel*Link Corporation doing business as ViaPath Technologies as the operator of gtl.net. The terms are effective January 4, 2022; current facility-specific instructions and transaction disclosures should guide an individual payment.
