To insure an engagement ring, first check the jewelry limit, covered losses, deductible, and claim settlement terms in your homeowners or renters policy. If those terms do not adequately protect the ring, ask about scheduling it on that policy or compare a standalone jewelry policy. The right choice depends on the actual policy wording—not just the product name or a quoted premium.
Check what your homeowners or renters policy already covers
Start with your declarations page and the policy’s personal-property and jewelry provisions. Jewelry may be covered as personal property, but many standard homeowners and renters policies set a combined limit for jewelry that can be much lower than an engagement ring’s value. A theft limit also does not necessarily cover accidental loss or damage.
Review these terms together:
- Jewelry sublimit: Find the maximum payable for jewelry and whether the limit applies per item or to all jewelry combined.
- Covered causes of loss: Check whether the policy covers theft only, or also accidental loss, disappearance, and damage.
- Exclusions and location: Read exclusions and find out whether protection applies away from home and while traveling.
- Deductible and settlement: Check the deductible and whether a covered claim is settled at actual cash value, replacement cost, or another amount defined by the contract.
The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) advises: “Review your policy or check with your insurance agent to find out the scope of your current coverage.” NAIC homeowners and renters insurance guidance explains why it is important to check both the limit and the type of loss covered.
Choose how to add coverage
If the existing policy’s terms or limits are not enough, ask your insurer about adding the ring to the policy or compare a separate jewelry policy. These are different contracts, so compare their terms rather than assuming one route is automatically broader.
#1 Best Overall
- DISCREET POCKET SIZE: Keep your proposal box close with a slim, flat design that fits in a pants or jacket pocket. Measures 3.5 x 2.25 x 0.75 inches; check your pocket dimensions for a comfortable fit.
- ROTATING RING REVEAL: A built-in rotating holder turns your engagement ring into presentation position as the box opens, adding movement to your proposal moment.
- MAGNETIC CLOSURE AND SOFT LINING: A magnetic clasp closes the box, while the velour interior and black faux-leather exterior provide a simple presentation for your ring.
- CHECK YOUR RING'S FIT: Designed for up to a 14 mm diamond, a band width up to 5 mm, and a ladies' ring size up to 10. Compare these limits with your ring before ordering, especially for tall or unusually shaped settings.
- READY FOR YOUR PROPOSAL: A compact ring presentation box for engagements, anniversaries, and special occasions. Ring not included. Check how your ring sits and how the box opens and closes before the occasion.
| Option | How it works | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Existing homeowners or renters coverage | The ring may fall under personal-property coverage, subject to the policy’s limits, covered causes of loss, and other terms. | Jewelry sublimit, covered losses, deductible, exclusions, and settlement basis. |
| Scheduled jewelry endorsement | An endorsement adds or changes coverage for a ring on the existing policy, usually for an additional cost. | Whether it covers accidental loss or damage, changes the deductible or geographic scope, and affects claim handling. |
| Standalone jewelry policy | A separate insurance contract for jewelry, with its own application, policy wording, and claims process. | Covered losses, exclusions, limit, deductible, jeweler choice, settlement method, and state availability. |
NAIC describes endorsements and separate policies as options to consider when standard homeowners or renters coverage is insufficient. Read the proposed forms and exclusions: an endorsement modifies the existing policy, while standalone coverage is a separate contract.

- Does the policy cover the ring away from home and during travel? Is coverage domestic or worldwide?
- What exclusions apply, and are there circumstances in which the insurer may deny a claim?
- What maximum limit and value basis apply? Does the insurer accept the ring’s documented replacement value?
- What deductible applies, and what is the annual premium?
- Does the insurer require an appraisal to apply, or only when making a claim?
- Who chooses the jeweler, and will the insurer pay cash, arrange repair, or replace the ring?
- Could a claim affect the homeowners or renters premium or claims history?
Coverage details and availability vary by state and insurer. Check that the insurer is licensed where you live, review the current policy forms, and consider the carrier’s financial and claims information. NAIC provides an insurer lookup through its Consumer Information Source. A jewelry insurer’s description of its own claims service is not a guarantee that another insurer offers the same process.
Document the ring and its replacement value
Before paying for an appraisal, ask the insurer what documentation it accepts and when it is required. Depending on the insurer and policy, a detailed purchase receipt may be enough to apply; an appraisal may be required for a quote, to issue coverage, or only if you make a claim. NAIC recommends keeping photos and an appraisal in a home inventory.

A useful appraisal describes the ring in enough detail to identify it and support a replacement-value estimate. It may include photographs and an estimate of current retail replacement value. That figure is not the same as what the ring would likely sell for secondhand, and an appraisal does not guarantee a claim payment. The contract’s limit, valuation terms, proof requirements, and claim investigation still apply.
Keep a copy of the receipt, appraisal if obtained, clear photographs, policy schedule or endorsement, and insurer contact details somewhere you can access if the ring is lost. Jewelers Mutual recommends updating an appraisal every two years; that is the provider’s recommendation, not a general legal requirement or industry rule. Ask your insurer whether it requires a newer valuation.

Decide who should insure the ring
The ring’s owner or the person named as an insured should confirm that the policy covers the ring and that the insurer has the required documents. If one partner owns the ring and the other is buying coverage, ask the insurer whose name should appear on the application, policy, or schedule and whether both partners need to be listed. Do not assume that a partner is covered simply because you share a home or a policy; the contract’s definitions and named-insured provisions govern.

Follow the notice and proof requirements in your own policy, and contact the insurer promptly after a loss. The insurer may ask for a description of what happened and evidence that you owned the ring; requirements vary by carrier and claim.

For example, Jewelers Mutual says it may request a short written account and proof of ownership such as a receipt, appraisal, or dated photo, and may require a police report for certain claims. Its claims page describes repair or replacement subject to the insured limit. Those are provider-specific terms, not a universal checklist or promise about another policy.
