How to Install and Use Indicators on MT4 and MT5

Built-in MetaTrader indicators can be added directly to a chart. Custom MT4 and MT5 indicators require the correct folder and, when supplied as source code, successful compilation.

You can add MetaTrader’s built-in indicators directly to a chart; they do not need a separate download or installation. A custom indicator requires the right workflow for your platform: MT5 uses the terminal’s MQL5/Indicators folder, while MT4 documentation describes Experts/Indicators. After adding one, use its properties to set inputs and appearance, then inspect or remove it from the chart’s indicator list.

Choose a built-in or custom indicator

Built-in indicators are already part of the terminal. Add one from Navigator, the Insert menu, or the Indicators toolbar. A custom indicator is an additional application: install it from a file or obtain it through MetaTrader’s software resources, then attach it to a chart.

Indicators may appear directly over price data, as a Moving Average often does, or in a separate chart window, as MACD commonly does. The indicator determines its display type. MetaTrader distinguishes indicators, which analyze price dynamics, from Expert Advisors, which can automate analytical and trading activities. An indicator itself does not place orders. See MetaTrader 4 Help: Custom Indicators.

Add a built-in indicator to a chart

  1. Open the chart you want to analyze.
  2. Find an indicator. In MT4 or MT5, open Navigator and locate the indicator, or choose Insert → Indicators. You can also use the Indicators toolbar command.
  3. Apply it. Drag the indicator from Navigator onto the chart, or select it through the menu or toolbar.
  4. Review its properties and adjust the inputs or display options you need before accepting. The indicator will appear over the chart or in a separate subwindow, depending on its design. MetaTrader documents these workflows for MT5 and MT4.

Install a custom indicator in MT5

  1. In the terminal, choose File → Open Data Folder. This opens the data directory for that installation.
  2. Open MQL5/Indicators and copy the custom indicator file there. You can use subfolders to organize indicators.
  3. If the downloaded file is source code ending in .mq5, open it in MetaEditor and compile it. The documented compile shortcut is F7; successful compilation creates an executable .ex5 file.
  4. Return to MT5 and locate the indicator in Navigator. If it is not listed, refresh or reopen Navigator, then attach it to a chart using the built-in indicator steps above.

MetaTrader describes the data-folder, compilation, and executable-file workflow in its guide to creating an Expert Advisor or indicator. Its Market and Code Base are also discovery routes for additional indicator applications and free source code, respectively.

Install and attach a custom indicator in MT4

MT4’s help describes custom indicator files in the terminal’s Experts/Indicators folder and explains that custom indicators are created and compiled in MetaEditor. Source files compile to executable .ex4 files; an indicator that fails compilation cannot be attached. Follow MetaTrader’s creation and compilation guide.

Once the compiled indicator appears under Navigator → Custom Indicators, attach it by double-clicking, dragging it onto the chart, or selecting Attach to a chart. The attachment options are documented in MetaTrader’s MT4 chart instructions.

The MT4 help uses the legacy folder name Experts/Indicators. If your broker-customized or newer installation has a different layout, use that terminal’s File → Open Data Folder command and follow its MQL4 directory structure rather than guessing an operating-system path. The command’s behavior is described in MT4 File menu help.

Change settings and inspect indicator values

When attaching an indicator, its properties dialog lets you configure its inputs and presentation. Depending on the indicator, options can include colors, line styles, levels, display timeframes, and whether values appear in the Data Window. MT5 also allows an indicator to use price data or the output of an indicator already applied to the chart; for example, a Moving Average can be calculated on an oscillator to draw a signal line. Available controls vary by indicator, as described in the MT5 and MT4 indicator help.

To revisit settings or remove an indicator, open the chart’s indicator list or use the indicator’s context menu. In MT5, the Indicator List provides Properties and Delete Indicator. If the indicator occupies a separate subwindow, closing that window is a separate action.

Troubleshoot an indicator that is missing or will not attach

  • Confirm the platform. MT4 and MT5 use different indicator directories and executable file formats.
  • Check the terminal data folder. Use File → Open Data Folder in the same terminal where you want to use the indicator.
  • Verify the directory. Place the file in the appropriate indicator folder: MQL5/Indicators for MT5, or the applicable MT4 indicator layout.
  • Check compilation. If you have source code, compile it in MetaEditor and resolve errors before trying to attach it.
  • Look in Navigator. Confirm the indicator is listed under the relevant indicator category before attaching it.

Do not enable DLL imports or network access just to get an unfamiliar indicator running. MT4’s custom-indicator settings include Allow DLL imports and Allow WebRequest for listed URL; WebRequest is disabled by default and requires explicitly trusted URLs. These permissions can expose your system or data to code you do not trust, so check the developer and source before enabling them. See MT4 custom-indicator setup help.
