You generally cannot register a legitimate .edu domain or buy a personal .edu address. EDUCAUSE, the .edu registrar, limits domain registration to qualifying institutions—not individual students. If you are admitted or enrolled, ask your school whether it provides a student email account and how to activate it. For discounts, follow the specific offer’s verification rules; a .edu address is not necessarily the only accepted method.
Can you get a .edu email address without being a student?
Not by registering a .edu domain yourself. EDUCAUSE says eligibility is limited to U.S. postsecondary institutions with institution-wide accreditation from an agency on the U.S. Department of Education’s list of institutional accrediting agencies. Eligible institutions apply to EDUCAUSE, which reviews applications for eligibility and accuracy. Its application guidance says review can take 4–6 weeks or longer, so a new institutional domain is not an instant way to get an address. Those rules concern domain registration by institutions and organizations, not the creation of a student mailbox. EDUCAUSE says the requested domain must reasonably represent the applicant and cannot be generic. Its rules also describe a limit of up to two names for a qualifying registrant, subject to grandfathering and organizational exceptions. None of that gives an individual a route to purchase or claim a student email account.
How to ask your school for a student email account
- Check your student portal. Look for email, account setup, technology, or IT instructions. Schools may publish activation steps there.
- Contact the right office. Ask admissions, the registrar, or the IT help desk whether the school provides student email and how you can activate it.
- Confirm your account’s terms. Ask what identity or enrollment checks are required, when access begins, and whether the account remains available after graduation. These policies vary by institution; there is no universal activation or post-graduation rule.
If you are comparing schools, the Department of Education’s accredited postsecondary institutions and programs lookup can help you check accreditation information. The Department notes that it does not accredit schools itself. Accreditation, eligibility for federal student aid, a school’s decision to issue email accounts, and .edu domain eligibility are distinct matters. The Federal Student Aid Handbook discusses requirements for schools to participate in Title IV programs, but those requirements do not replace EDUCAUSE’s .edu-specific criteria. What to do if you need a student discount
Discount eligibility is set by the individual retailer or verification service, not by EDUCAUSE or your school. A provider may use its own rules for student status, location, institution, and proof. Check the instructions shown for the exact offer, and use the verification method it specifies.
- Open the offer’s current terms and identify how it verifies students.
- If your school does not issue a .edu address, or the address is rejected, contact the provider’s support team.
- Ask whether another verification method is available and which documents it currently accepts before submitting anything.
Do not assume a student ID, acceptance letter, or enrollment letter will work for every offer. Acceptance depends on the provider’s current rules, and there is no universal substitute established across discounts.

Why buying a .edu account is not a shortcut
A mailbox does not establish that you are enrolled or eligible for a student offer. The official registration rules describe applications by qualifying institutions and organizational applicants, not personal purchase. Avoid paying a third party that claims to sell a .edu account as a shortcut to student status.
