First identify your residency and age category, then choose the right license and duration, buy it from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) or a licensed seller, and make sure it is signed before you fish. A license does not replace any required king salmon stamp, harvest record, fishery permit, or local regulations check.
Who needs an Alaska sport fishing license?
ADF&G requires a sport fishing license for sport and personal-use fishing in fresh and marine waters for:
- Alaska residents age 18 or older.
- Nonresidents age 16 or older.
Resident anglers younger than 18 and nonresidents younger than 16 are generally exempt from buying a sport license. Residents age 60 or older and qualifying Alaska disabled veterans may fish without one if they apply for and carry the applicable ADF&G Identification Card. Some anglers exempt from a paid license still need a free Sport Fishing Harvest Record Card for species with annual harvest limits. Check ADF&G’s license information and residency guidance to confirm which category applies.
How ADF&G defines an Alaska resident
Residency is more than being in Alaska, owning property there, or working there seasonally. ADF&G reproduces the statutory definition: a resident is physically present in Alaska with the intent to remain indefinitely and make a home there, has maintained Alaska domicile for the 12 consecutive months immediately before applying, and is not claiming residency or obtaining benefits under a residency claim elsewhere. The law also has provisions for qualifying active-duty military members and dependents. ADF&G separately lists nonresident military and nonresident alien categories. If your circumstances are unclear, ask ADF&G or the Alaska Wildlife Troopers before selecting a license category.

How to buy and sign your license
ADF&G offers purchases through its online store, Fish and Game offices, and most sporting-goods or other licensed vendors. For an online e-signed license, you need an email account, an ADF&G account (not a myAlaska account), and an internet-capable device. The e-signature prompt appears during checkout. ADF&G says, “No matter which type of license you carry, it must have a physical signature or eSignature on it to be valid.” See its online purchasing and e-signature FAQ for details.

- Identify your category. Use your age, residency status, and any qualifying ADF&G identification-card status to determine which license or exemption applies.
- Choose the duration and license. Compare your planned fishing dates with the current fee options above and ADF&G’s price list.
- Buy from an authorized route. Use the ADF&G online store, a Fish and Game office, or a licensed vendor. For online e-signing, use your own ADF&G account and complete the signature prompt at checkout.
- Check that it is signed and carry it. A paper license needs a physical signature; an online license needs the e-signature. Keep it with you while fishing, in paper or electronic form as allowed by the applicable regional summary.
- Check for additional requirements. Before fishing, confirm whether your species or fishery requires a stamp, harvest record, separate permit, or other authorization, and review the current rules for the specific water.
Do you need a king salmon stamp, harvest record or separate permit?
King salmon stamp
In general, anglers need a king salmon stamp to fish for king salmon. A stamp is not required for king salmon in stocked lakes, for ADF&G Identification Card holders, resident anglers younger than 18, or nonresident anglers younger than 16. Verify the rules for the particular fishery because additional requirements may apply.
Harvest records
A license exemption does not necessarily exempt you from recording a catch. Anglers of any age may have to record species with annual harvest limits on their license or a Sport Fishing Harvest Record Card. When a card is required, carry it and record the catch immediately in the field as directed by ADF&G.

Personal-use and subsistence fishing
Personal-use fishing is limited to Alaska residents. It generally requires a valid resident sport fishing license, and some personal-use fisheries also require a separate permit. Subsistence fishing is governed separately and generally does not require a sport fishing license, although other rules or permits may apply. Do not treat sport, personal-use, and subsistence fishing as interchangeable categories; check ADF&G’s license guidance and the regulations for the fishery you plan to enter.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to check before you fish
A sport license is not blanket permission to fish every location, season, or species, and it does not set your allowable harvest. Seasons, limits, gear rules, and emergency restrictions depend on the water and fishery and can change. Use ADF&G’s current regional fishing regulations and emergency orders for your planned region, water, and species. ADF&G’s 2026 licensing summary is for Southcentral Alaska; its regional fishing rules should not be assumed to apply statewide.
